Cette correspondance crépusculaire couvre les dix dernières années de la vie de Stefan Zweig, durant lesquelles il écrit des livres importants, où l'Histoire joue un rôle majeur: les biographies de Marie-Antoinette et de Marie Stuart, Souvenirs d'un Européen, Le Joueur d' échecs, mais aussi Le Monde d'hier, qui constitue en quelque sorte le pendant de cette correspondance: l'écrivain y exprime son désarroi d'héritier des Lumières nostalgique d'un xixe siècle dont il ne reste presque rien. Peu à peu, la mélancolie et la souffrance font place à un état dépressif chronique. Zweig s'engage contre le nazisme. Résolument humaniste mais méfiant envers toute forme d'engagement politique, il ne parvient plus à trouver dans son existence - lui qui fut le chroniqueur de l'âge d'or de l'Europe - ce qui pourrait lui faire supporter le dégoût, la lassitude et la déception.

About the Author :
Né à Vienne en 1881, fils d'un industriel, Stefan Zweig a pu étudier en toute liberté l'histoire, les belles-lettres et la philosophie. Grand humaniste, ami de Romain Rolland, d'Émile Verhaeren et de Sigmund Freud, il a exercé son talent dans tous les genres (traductions, poèmes, roman, pièces de théâtre) mais a surtout excellé dans l'art de la nouvelle (La Confusion des sentiments, Vingt-quatre heures de la vie d'une femme), l'essai et la biographie (Marie-Antoinette, Fouché, Magellan...). Désespéré par la montée du nazisme, il fuit l'Autriche en 1934, se réfugie en Angleterre puis aux États-Unis. En 1942, il se suicide avec sa femme à Petrópolis, au Brésil.
