Eclipses par les oeuvres homonymes de Platon, Le Banquet et l'Apologie de Socrate forment cependant un temoignage de premier ordre sur la vie du celebre maitre de Socrate et de Platon. A Athenes, par un bel ete, en 422, les Panathenees battent leur plein. Callias croise dans la rue Socrate et ses disciples, Critobule, Hermogene, Antisthene et Charmide, et les invite pour le soir-meme au banquet qu'il donne pour celebrer la victoire au pancrace d'Autolycos, son amant. Le soir, apres les rejouissances, les convives discutent de l'amour. Non seulement le type de recit, mais aussi les themes de reflexions sont les memes que dans le fameux dialogue de Platon. Il en va de meme pour l'Apologie de Socrate, qui relate le proces et les derniers moments du maitre. Outre le vif interet historique de ces deux textes qui livrent un portrait pittoresque de la jeunesse doree de l'Athenes classique, la comparaison avec les dialogues platoniciens est des plus feconde: le lecteur decouvre dans ces lignes un Socrate parfois joyeux, souvent bourru, en tous les cas profondement humain, et peut-etre plus veridique que l'impeccable maitre spirituel que Platon a voulu laisser dans nos memoires.
