Depuis quelques années, des jeux de lumière ont fait surgir de la nuit les plus beaux monuments de l'ancienne France. Le Palais de Versailles et le Palais des Papes, les châteaux du Val de Loire, de Chambord à Chenonceaux, s'illuminent et, devant leurs façades transfigurées, des voix se répondent dans l'espace. Elles évoquent, comme le faisaient les choeurs des tragédies antiques, les événements qui se sont déroulés dans ces lieux. Ce choeur se tait parfois et l'on entend alors ceux qui furent les acteurs de ces fêtes ou de ces drames, de ces catastrophes ou de ces triomphes. Ces spectacles s'adressent à la grande foule. Ce sont des spectacles populaires. Ils s'ouvrent sur le merveilleux et se déroulent dans une illusion dont il ne faut pas rompre le charme... Le feu des projecteurs vide les façades de leur poids. La pesanteur disparaît sous cette lumière irréelle. Ces fenêtres et ces murs sont pareils à ceux que l'on voit en songe. Baignés dans une auréole blanche ou dans une auréole dorée, colorés de bleu ou de rouge, ces monuments reçoivent l'ombre et la lumière suivant d'autres lois que celles du jour et de la nuit. Ces féeries du Son et de la Lumière ne pouvaient manquer de jeter leurs feux sur Vincennes. Mille ans d'Histoire ont laissé leurs traces sur ce château. Avec son donjon et sa chapelle, avec son pavillon du Roi, son pavillon de la Reine, sa galerie rustique et son arc de triomphe, il est un des rares monuments où l'on peut voir une forteresse du Moyen Âge s'élever au-dessus des architectures du Grand Siècle. Pour écrire la partition de ce spectacle, il fallait se soumettre à ses servitudes, accepter ses limites et savoir user des chances qu'il nous offre. Tout est convention, dans ces grands ballets de la nuit. André Maurois, le premier, en réalisant le livret du spectacle de Versailles, avait fixé les règles du genre. C'est lui qui a compris et qui nous a fait comprendre qu'il fallait alterner les récits du choeur antique et les voix des personnages illustres qui vécurent dans ces lieux. Avec le Grand Roi lui-même il nous avait fait entendre Bossuet dans la chaire de la chapelle de Versailles et cette voix s'était élevée comme un écho de l'éternité. C'est pour cela que, devant les murs de Vincennes, j'ai cru pouvoir évoquer les voix de Saint Louis, de Charles IX, de Mazarin, du duc d'Enghien et du général Daumesnil. Il faut les écouter avec une âme enfantine, car ce livret n'a pas d'autre but que de raconter un morceau de notre Histoire comme on la raconte aux enfants. A. C.
