Il s'agit d'un ouvrage (auto)biographique et philosophique qui traite du mouvement des idees et de la societe durant la periode allant de 1965 a 1975. Pourquoi ce titre ? Parce que, selon l'auteur, la generation 65-75 a eu, a tort ou a raison, le sentiment qu'elle pouvait penser plus librement que les generations precedentes (trop encombrees de marxisme ou d'ideologies defuntes, de Vichy aux guerres coloniales). Jean-Claude Milner assume son appartenance a cette generation arrogante qui se crut, plus qu'une autre, capable de faire du passe table rase ... Pourquoi les annees 65-75 ? Parce que, en meme temps, on y assista au debut du declin du marxisme et a la fin de l'apres-guerre. La place etait libre pour forger de nouveaux concepts. Cette periode s'acheva, historiquement, avec la fin des trente glorieuses et la progressive disparition du gauchisme europeen. Ce livre opere, par ailleurs, une distinction inhabituelle entre le gauchisme et le mouvement de Mai 68. Le gauchisme, en effet, desire une revolution tandis que les soixante-huitards ne desirent que le triomphe de l'esprit libertaire. Au centre de ce desir de revolution gauchiste, . Milner place l'aventure de la Gauche Proletarienne - dont il fut l'un des grands acteurs. De plus, ce livre se veut egalement autobiographique, dans la mesure ou son auteur y a experimente sa philosophie. Ce qui l'interesse: La rencontre du nom de Revolution par les porteurs du nom juif . Y avait-il donc, pour les Juifs, un enjeu particulier dans cette redefinition de l'idee revolutionnaire ? Milner le croit. En ce sens, on peut dire que L'arrogance du present acheve le tryptique qui compte deja Les penchants criminels de l'Europe democratique et Le Juif de savoir.
