L'intelligence et la gloire ont toujours attire des disciples enthousiastes et prets a tout... Rousseau eut ainsi, en son temps, de grands ennemis et de vrais admirateurs. Parmi eux, peut-etre, les pires qui furent jamais: les freres Chapelet. J'ai croise ces deux heros dans mes reves. Je les ai trouves tres betes et tres attachants. Ces deux fils de paysans se sont enrichis. Ils sont devenus bourgeois, ils ont lu des livres, ils sont tombes amoureux de Rousseau. Ayant lu le Contrat Social et La Nouvelle Heloise, ils ne revent que d'inviter Rousseau dans leur propriete de Precy-sur-Oise. C'est la que je les prends, au saut du reve. Jean et Jacques consacrent toutes leurs forces a leur grand homme: ils etudient ses livres, ils travaillent ses operas, ils s'echinent a etablir un jardin tel que Rousseau l'a pense, que "l'ame puisse s'y livrer tout entiere a la douceur d'un sentiment profond." Malheureusement, les choses ne sont pas si simples: leur jardin est inculte, les uvres de Jean-Jacques parfois bien difficiles a comprendre et, pour couronner le tout, un certain marquis de Girardin les devance en recevant Rousseau chez lui, a Ermenonville. Mais la passion emporte tout, dans sa beaute et sa folie. Rousseau n'est pas venu a eux ? Le temps de rassembler quelques affaires, de fermer la maison et, en route pour Ermenonville ! Ainsi debute la rocambolesque aventure de ces deux freres idolatres et si proches de nous... ."
