Ils se sont rendus dans des endroits cruciaux pour la comprehension de la vie d'Irene Nemirovsky, par exemple en Russie. Grace au triomphe posthume de Suite francaise (Denoel, 2004), la France et le reste du monde ont redecouvert une des voix les plus singulieres de la litterature des annees 30. Nee en Ukraine en 1903, Irene Nemirovsky a vecu malgre elle la vie la plus romanesque qui soit, emportee par les tourbillons des drames de la premiere moitie du XXe siecle. Sa famille, d'une bourgeoisie juive aisee, s'installe a Saint-Petersbourg, d'ou elle est chassee par la Revolution d'Octobre. Apres une installation temporaire en Finlande et en Suede, elle s'etablit a Paris en 1919. Irene Nemirovsky commence alors une carriere d'ecrivain. Son roman David Golder, publie par Grasset en 1929, est un succes et est bientot adapte au theatre et au cinema. Le Bal (Grasset, 1930) et Les Mouches d'automne (Grasset, 1931) sont deux chefs-d'oeuvre qui marquent sa vie de romanciere. Epousant Michel Epstein de qui elle a deux enfants (le futur editeur Elisabeth Gille et Denise Epstein), elle mene une vie heureuse entre Paris et la Cote Basque jusqu'aux premieres convulsions de la crise qui menera a la seconde guerre mondiale. En juillet 1942, quoique convertie au catholocisme depuis 1939, elle est arretee par la police francaise dans le petit village de Bourgogne ou elle etait repliee, deportee a Auschwitz, elle y meurt le mois suivant. Portrait d'un ecrivain, recit de la vie d'une femme, miroir de la societe intellectuelle europeenne d'avant-guerre, La Vie d'Irene Nemirovsky est un document unique et poignant.
