Janvier 1934. Un homme dans la trentaine, elegant, decide, range sa voiture devant une belle demeure ou l'on choque les grands depressifs, avant de les installer, tels des azalees, des hellebores, dans une verriere qui domine Paris. Kobald, c'est son nom, rend visite a son ami, son patron, son maitre, un homme a moustache, qui somnole devant une gouache: Berrnard Grasset. L'editeur genial a deja publie Radiguet, Cocteau, Kafka. Mais aussi Hitler et Trotski. Il s'est dispute avec Malraux. Dans Paris-papier, on dit qu'il est fou. Chaque annee, le Patron reste de longs mois vides a Meudon, dormant parmi les manuscrits et les lettres, hebete. Puis, en tweed et cravate, il reconquiert Saint-Germain des pres: le centre du monde. Kobald n'a qu'une idee en tete, s'assurer que le roi est mort. Que le Patron, lessive par la lecture sans fin, par son metier, par les auteurs, leurs caprices, leur genie parfois, lessive par ses amours, lui laissera sous peu les clefs de la maison des livres, sise depuis vingt ans au 61 rue des Saints-Peres. Ce roman etonnant nous conte six mois de passions chez les gens du papier . Six mois de lutte entre ces deux hommes qui s'aiment fraternellement, s'epient, se mentent, mentent a tous les autres, surtout, en souvenir du temps ou, venus de province, ils n'avaient qu'un costume pour deux et pour les soirs de fete. Six mois qui s'achevent par la remise du prix Goncourt 1934. Quartier general du bruit est donc un roman sur la litterature, et la passion absolue de la litterature. Dans cette secte un peu a part, on croise peu de notaires. Les editeurs jettent les manuscrits par les fenetres, lisent jour et nuit, se baignent, une page a la main, et recitent la Chanson du mal-aime a celle qu'ils aiment. On croise aussi des romanciers, des revolutionnaires, des poetes, quelques industriels, des femmes de haute tenue ou de basse volee, des joueurs de pokers - rois secrets de notre epoque.
