Du hussard droitier, rejeton de la haute societe protestante qui marche sur les mains pour epater Bardot au contestataire cinephile qui ecrit a Malraux ministre de la Kultur une lettre sur la censure, gestapo de l'esprit, du realisateur tyrannique humiliant ses acteurs a l'amoureux peintre des femmes dans Prenom Carmen, du moraliste politise en treillis de combat au King Lear sepulcral cigare en bouche, de l'historien des images relie au passe au kinoclaste shoote au show-business, defilent ici quatre-vingt annees de vie, de cinema, de travail et de passions brulantes. Son genie est plus fort que sa volonte d'auto-destruction disait Daniel Cohn-Bendit. C'est aussi la resurrection d'une epoque francaise: la cinephilie, d'une fraternite (avec Truffaut), d'une rivalite sous l'oeil des cameras.

Historien et critique de cinema, redacteur en chef des Cahiers du cinema entre 1997 et 1999, puis redacteur en chef des pages Culture de Liberation de 2001 a 2006, Antoine de Baecque est l'auteur d'un grand nombre de livres consacres au cinema, parmi lesquels on retiendra sa biographie coecrite avec Serge Toubiana de Francois Truffaut (Gallimard, 1996, 50.000 ex. vendus), La Nouvelle Vague, portrait d'une jeunesse (Flammarion, 1998), L'histoire-camera (Gallimard, 2008), mais aussi d'essais historiques, entre autres, La gloire et l'effroi (1997) chez Grasset.
