Je ne sais plus chez quel romancier russe j'ai lu que le monde est peuple de velleitaires tourmentes par leurs illusions: Jean-Simon Blaize et Cora Eden, les deux narrateurs principaux, sont de ceux-la. Le premier, comedien rate, asthmatique comme Jouvet, mais frivole et paresseux, celebre a l'oree du roman ses quarante ans et sa retraite loin de la capitale, dans une bastide cevenole. A la fete qu'il organise surgit Cora Eden, qu'il connut a ses debuts sur scene: comme lui, mais plus tot, Cora a renonce a sa carriere de comedienne. Ce soir-la, Cora et Jean-Simon, dont la relation se teinte d'un mepris reciproque, se decouvrent une attache commune: Georgio Vilanovitch, metteur en scene et dramaturge tyrannique, dont les creations oscillent entre sordide et feerie; Georgio, grand solitaire, aux yeux verts qui ne vous laissent pas tranquilles . Jean-Simon et Georgio sont amis depuis le lycee; au fil des annees, le premier a pu suivre, non sans quelque amertume, le succes grandissant du second. Cora est devenue l'assistante du metteur en scene: a defaut de jouer sous sa direction, factotum resignee, elle a su se rendre indispensable. Pour l'un et pour l'autre, Georgio est le miroir inverse et cruel d'une existence mediocre. Quant a Gladius, le clown melancolique et depuis peu l'amant de Cora, il n'a pas su voir, vingt ans auparavant, que le jeune Georgio qui le conduisait alors au succes, lui prenait aussi sa femme... Georgio meurt prematurement, fauche par une auto sur un boulevard parisien. Il laisse a Jean-Simon et a Cora une confession inachevee, comme un dernier coup de theatre, levant le voile sur le ressort enigmatique de son existence, celle d'un etre plein d'orgueil, tout sauf un ange, ne de pere inconnu, mu par le seul desir d'echapper au destin miserable de sa propre mere battant le pave le soir pour vendre, contre quelques pieces, des fleurs a l'unite. Reprenant la plume qu'il leur tend au-dela de la mort, Cora et Jean-Simon, en alternance, comme s'ils se donnaient la replique, racontent: a leur tour ils mettent a nu leur propre existence, sous les feux de la rampe d'une relation triangulaire desormais sans fard. C'est l'histoire que nous lisons, orchestree par les mots de l 'ami disparu, dont la confession, recit gigogne insere a la fin du roman, fournit la cle ne pas sourire dans la defaite .
