Ses heros sont illustres: Malraux, Gide, Hemingway, le photographe Frank Capa, Salavador Dali, Aragon, Breton, Georges Orwell, Georges Bataille, Gorki, Saint Exupery et des dizaines d'autres... Ces premiers roles, Dan Franck, les met en situation: ici, il surprend une conversation; la, il detaille leur vanite ou leur courage. L'ensemble produit un melange unique de grande et de petite histoire. On a l'impression de suivre un film monte comme une serie de plans ou l'epoque se raconte, s'expose, se resume. Le talent de Dan Franck, si doue pour la formule seche et brillante, fait le reste: cette fresque se devore comme un roman. Le roman de toutes les folies, de tous les enthousiasmes, de toutes les illusions... Ces scenes, toujours fulgurantes de verite, parviennent a nous faire comprendre ce que furent ces annees-la la matrice de notre modernite.
