Daniel Halevy nait en 1870 dans une famille de juifs bavarois installes en France au moment de la Revolution francaise, et qui s'agregea au XIXeme siecle a la bourgeoisie protestante liberale parisienne. C'est un judaisme laique et liberal, assimile, qui sera transmis a Daniel par son pere, librettiste d'Offenbach puis romancier elu a l'Academie francaise. Au lycee Condorcet, Daniel Halevy fonde avec Proust groupes et revues, tandis que dans le salon familial, il fait la connaissance de Barres, Gide ou Henri de Regnier. Il decouvre Nietszche dont il devient le premier traducteur et le premier biographe, delaissant le dilettantisme lyceen pour entamer une veritable carriere litteraire. C'est egalement a cette epoque que s'affirme son gout pour l'engagement politique: tenant d'un socialisme heterodoxe, antimaterialiste et antiparlementariste, partisan de l'autonomie ouvriere et du principe cooperatif, il sera l'un des fondateurs des Universites Populaires puis de l'Enseignement Mutuel. Halevy est parmi les premiers dreyfusards. L'attitude de la classe politique et de la presse, en majorite antidreyfusarde, mais aussi la position des republicains, ne fera que conforter chez Halevy son antiparlementarisme. Sa rencontre avec Charles Peguy en 1900, sa collaboration aux celebres Cahiers de la Quinzaine, consacrent le retour de Halevy a des ecrits plus litteraires. Les annees d'entre-deux-guerre marquent l'apogee de sa carriere comme critique, essayiste et journaliste, mais aussi comme editeur: en 1920, il fonde chez Grasset les Cahiers Verts qu'il dirigera pendant treize ans - il publie alors, parmi d'autres, Maurois, Malraux, Mauriac, Benda, Guilloux, Giono ou Montherlant... C'est aussi dans ces annees que, decu par les liberaux et inquiet de l'avenir de la civilisation europeenne, il se rapproche nettement de la droite maurassienne. Apres sa critique de la Troisieme Republique (La Republique des ducs, La Fin des notables), c'est finalement l'ensemble de l'oeuvre republicaine qu'il met en cause. Cette evolution ideologique dans l'entre-deux-guerre le conduira a soutenir le gouvernement de Vichy et la Revolution nationale des les premiers jours de l'armistice. Halevy meurt en 1962, apres avoir echoue une deuxieme fois a entrer a l'Academie francaise.
