Pierre Combescot est journaliste au Canard Enchaine. Il est l'auteur de Louis II de Baviere (1973), des Funerailles de la Sardine (Prix Medicis 1986), des Filles du Calvaire (Prix Goncourt 1991), de La Sainte Famille (1996), du Songe de Pharaon (1998) et Les Petites Mazarines (1999). Ce roman est une saga qui court sur trois generations, comme pour demontrer qu'il faut plusieurs vies pour accomplir une destinee. C'est ce que ressent le heros du livre, Kuno von Urslingen-Frundsberg qu'on voit, aux premieres pages du roman, regagner Schwartzauge, le domaine de ses ancetres, au coeur du Tyrol. Il a fausse compagnie a la Panzer-division Frundsberg apres avoir tue deux jeunes caporaux qu'il soupconnait d'etre des mouchards de la Gestapo. Le chateau en flammes ne l'affecte pas, lui le deserteur, demi-juif errant dans les decombres du 3eme Reich: ce qui l'inquiete, c'est d'affronter la debacle de sa vie. Il n'a pas connu ses parents, Ulrich et Sarah l'italienne, morts dans un accident de voiture, selon son grand-pere, Tassilo, qui l'eleve avec l'aide de Mademoiselle Marthe, la gouvernante francaise. Tassilo possedait, sous l'ecorce d'un salaud reactionnaire, l'ame d'un delinquant. Et peut-etre est-ce a cause de cela qu'il fut fascine par les Nazis . Et si Tassilo ne ressemble en rien a son pere, le comte Hynko, viveur raffine qui prefere Vienne et sa decadence a la chasse au sanglier, c'est parce qu'il est le fils du garde-chasse, Udo. Hynko a cependant assez de pouvoir sur Tassilo pour lui imposer un mariage avec Malvina Hirchwitz, fille d'un banquier juif qui reve d'entrer dans le Gotha. En realite Hynko, par ce mariage, installe a Schwartzauge, Marie Guimard, celebre ballerine francaise, alias Marthe qui porte un enfant de lui. Tassilo, abuse, croit qu'il est le pere de cet enfant. Apres le suicide d'Hynko, Tassilo, pour s'assurer des revenus, organise des chasses ou se pressent grands de ce monde et dignitaires Nazis qui se voient deja proprietaires du chateau et de sa galerie de portraits. A la fin de la guerre, Kuno retrouve Marthe, vieillie, qui finit de lui apprendre ce qu'il avait en partie devine elle est sa grand-mere et ses parents sont vivants. Kuno et Marthe s'enfuient alors jusqu'a Ferrare, rejoindre les parents de Kuno. Mais a leur arrivee, ils apprennent qu'ils sont morts en deportation. Marthe ne survit pas a son chagrin. Kuno rejoint ce qui lui reste de famille a Paris. Il se consacre alors a la traduction du livre qui ne l'a jamais quitte et qui relate la vie de son ancetre: Vie et Mort de l'illustrissime capitaine Georg von Frundsberg ou l'ecole des Lansquenets. Il fera de ses notes accumulees en marge de ces pages un roman, pour dire l'histoire d'une ame et de sa desolation.
