Jean-Baptiste Savigny a vingt-sept ans quand, sous l'effet d'une cuite malheureuse, il s'enrole volontaire, chirurgien de troisieme classe a bord de La Meduse: escortee de trois autres batiments, la fregate quitte Rochefort pour l'Afrique, avec pour mission de reprendre aux Anglais le Senegal, que le Traite de Paris a restitue a la France apres la chute de Napoleon, quelques mois plus tot. On connait un peu la suite, representee par le celebre tableau de Gericault, mais on en sait mal les details: la fregate, commandee par le vicomte de Chaumareys, un vieil officier royaliste, incompetent et alcoolique, echouera le 2 juillet 1816, au large de la Mauritanie, sur le banc d'Arguin ... bien connu des marins. Les deux cents hommes qui ne pourront prendre place dans les embarcations de secours construisent un radeau de vingt metres sur sept que les chaloupes remorqueront quelques miles, avant que, sur l'ordre du futur gouverneur du Senegal, impatient de prendre ses fonctions, le boulet inutile ne soit abandonne en pleine mer, avec son chargement humain. Entasses sur le radeau, de l'eau jusqu'aux genoux, les naufrages meurent les uns apres les autres dans les rixes et les tempetes. Apres quelques jours, ils ne seront plus qu'une vingtaine, a cours de vivres, qui se decideront a manger l'un des cadavres, savamment decoupe par Savigny, le chirurgien de troisieme classe... Avec une joie manifeste, Erik Emptaz explore l'ame humaine en proie a la folie et au desespoir, stigmatise la violence et les bassesses humaines, et moque l'incurie et la vanite de ceux qui usurpent leur pouvoir. Fondee sur l'etude minutieuse des faits, La Malediction de la Meduse est un recit d'aventure plus qu'un roman historique. Une histoire pour le moins fascinante ou la vigueur du ton, la drolerie des personnages saisis dans leur moindre defaut et les clins d'oeil au lecteur temperent l'effroi d'un destin tragique dont la lachete et la fatuite humaines sont seules responsables.
