" Francois Mauriac a ose. Il n'a pas craint non plus d'ouvrir son livre sur cet avertissement direct: " Si tu doutes qu'une jeune fille bien nee et parfois devote puisse descendre jusqu'ou tu vois Gisele de Plailly, songe a ton ame eprise de Dieu, mais qui, toujours, aima plus ardemment ses souillures. " Gisele de Plailly a eu une aventure. De cette etreinte est ne un enfant qu'a fait passer pour sien une amie, Mme de Villeron. Plus tard, dans une auberge des Pyrenees, Gisele se lie avec un inconnu beau et hardi, Daniel Trasis. Mme de Villeron veut entrainer Gisele loin de cette tentation, mais, la veille de leur depart, Gisele rejoint Daniel dans sa chambre et se donne a lui. Derriere la porte, Mme de Villeron guette et attend: quand Gisele sort, elle la recouvre de son manteau et l'entraine. Gisele regagne le toit paternel et Daniel rentre a Paris. Mais Daniel veut revoir Gisele et il la surprend a l'eglise du village, lorsqu'elle vient de communier. Ici, c'est la grace qui triomphera: Daniel s'en ira sans avoir parle a Gisele. Celle-ci est-elle sauvee ? La peinture du desir qu'on trouve dans le Fleuve de feu est admirable: Francois Mauriac a des mouvements de phrase qui degagent le trouble sensuel qu'il veut analyser, et son heroine est d'une verite inoubliable.

Francois Mauriac (1885-1970) a recu, en 1952, le prix Nobel pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre. C'est un des plus importants ecrivains francais, tant pour ses romans que pour son celebre Bloc-Notes.
