Franck est ne le 6 juin 1968. Enfance et famille d'accueil dans le Nord, Boulogne-sur-Mer, Gravelines, Wimereux. CAP, apprenti en patisserie a Paris. Puis Gare du Nord, Jourdain, Oberkampf, Les Halles, la vie dans les squats, les bars, les halls de gare, les strategies pour faire la manche, la realite de la marge. Apres c'est Fleury-Merogis, le quotidien de la cellule et du parloir, Bethune ou Lille, les maisons d'arret, le juge, le tribunal. La narratrice de ce recit est la femme qui a aime Franck, qui l'a soutenu, l'a visite en prison, a ete le temoin de son errance et de sa chute. Celle qui a pris le metro, le bus, le train, voyage des journees entieres pour trente minutes de parloir, celle qui a reuni les papiers, fait des colis, dejoue les tracas avec l'AP (Administration penitentiaire), celle qui a eu peur, qui a attendu, espere. De ville en ville, de rues en montees d'escaliers, de chambres d'hotel en cours d'immeubles, de couloirs en guichets, elle temoigne, observe, se souvient, ecrit dans une langue tendue, aceree et visuelle, a la poesie parfois brulante et approche au plus juste le sentiment de vertige, de solitude et de violence contenue dans les villes. Franck est un livre qui dit la trajectoire d'un homme indesirable, qui n'a pas su trouver sa place mais a seulement trace sa route dans des lieux hostiles et provisoires, pousse a la fuite, a la rue, a l'echec, trainant un sac qui contient toute son existence: lettres, photos, papiers, minicassette et quelques livres, dont Le vieil homme et la mer d'Hemingway. Mais plus qu'un recit attache a la seule vie de Franck, c'est aussi un livre qui dresse le portrait d'une societe tout entiere en posant avec force la question de l'homme chasse et celle de la prison: comment elle agit sur les hommes, comment elle humilie, soumet et interdit a ceux qui se retrouvent entre ses murs de se construire une vie future.
