A onze ans, la petite Elisabeth est persuadee que la menace de sa mere ne sera jamais mise a execution. Elle a beau etre un garcon manque, un peu rebelle, elle n'ira pas en pension. Elle a tort. Nous sommes en 1959. Son pere officier vient d'etre mute en Algerie et sa mere ne peut assumer seule la charge de cette fille insoumise et de ses trois fils. Honneur et Patrie, telle est la devise du pensionnat dans lequel la petite Elisabeth va vivre sept annees loin de sa famille. Elle va connaitre la discipline severe d'une institution hors du temps: port de l'uniforme, parloir, ablutions reglementees, punitions humiliantes et ritualisees. Delaissee par sa mere, elle souffre d'etre separee de ses jeunes freres et meurt d'angoisse pour son pere qui combat en Algerie. Sa vie est ponctuee par le courrier et les visites de la grand-mere, les rares sorties du dimanche chez les grands-parents ou les cousins. Puis la guerre prend fin, les soldats rentrent chez eux, comme son pere qui lui propose alors de revenir a la maison. A sa propre stupeur, la fillette devenue adolescente s'entend repondre que non, elle prefere rester en pension. Vient enfin le jour de la sortie, elle a dix-huit ans. Elle retrouve une mere indifferente, un pere d'une rigueur toute militaire. Elle ne sait plus vraiment ou est sa place. Ce roman nous plonge au coeur des maisons d'education de la Legion d'honneur, etablissements prestigieux crees par Napoleon pour les filles des soldats meritants. Le recit d'Elisabeth Carle est celui d'une enfance volee. Quand elle retrouve la liberte, elle n'a qu'une envie: fuir loin des siens et croquer la vie a belles dents. Quarante ans plus tard, Elisabeth Carle raconte ses sept annees d'enfermement sans l'ombre d'une plainte ni d'une complaisance.

Elisabeth Carle a vecu en Allemagne ou elle a enseigne le francais a l'Institut francais de Cologne. Rentree en France elle a travaille dans le luxe (formation et marketing) avant de devenir journaliste. Passionnee de parfum elle a collabore a Votre Beaute, Atmospheres et a Cosmetique magazine. Elle a egalement donne des cours a l'institut superieur du parfum a Versailles (l'Isipca). D'honneur et d'eau fraiche est son premier roman. Photo: David Balicki
