La nouvelle, qui donne son titre au recueil, ne doit pas occulter les textes qui la suivent et qui touchent a des domaines tres differents - L'enfant malade decrit le delire d'un jeune garcon en proie a une fievre qui le mene jusqu'aux portes de la mort, La dame du photographe raconte, avec un art de la narration acheve, une tentative de suicide manque, Flore et Pomone est un poeme en prose sur les jardins, et Noces, une evocation autobiographique du premier mariage de l'ecrivain: ils ne lui sont en rien inferieurs.

28 janvier 1873 Naissance de Sidonie, Gabrielle Colette a Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye. 1893 A 20 ans, Colette epouse Henry Gauthier-Villars, dit Willy, a Chatillon-Coligny. Le couple s'installe a Paris. Debute alors pour Colette une vie mondaine ou elle frequente les salons litteraires et musicaux parisiens. 1900 Parution de Claudine a l'ecole, premier volet des aventures d'une jeune provinciale qui ressemble a Colette. Les trois volumes qui suivront porteront tous l'unique signature de Willy. Plus tard, le public decouvrira que l'auteur essentiel de la tetralogie n'est autre que Colette. 1906 Tournant decisif dans la vie de Colette. Apres treize ans de vie commune, elle se separe de Willy. La jeune femme se libere de l'emprise de ce mari et va s'accomplir pleinement dans sa vie de femme et d'artiste. Colette devient mime sous le pseudonyme de Colette Willy. Six annees durant, elle va se produire sur les scenes de France et d'Europe. Cette experience nous vaudra La Vagabonde et L'Envers du music-hall. Dans ces oeuvres, Colette temoigne de toute la durete du quotidien des artistes de cafe-concert. 1913 Naissance de Colette de Jouvenel, surnommee Bel-Gazou. Entre temps, Colette s'est fait connaitre dans le monde des lettres grace, entre autres a des ouvrages comme Dialogues de betes (1904), Les vrilles de la vigne (1905), La Vagabonde (1910)... 1923 Parution du premier livre signe Colette, Le Ble en herbe. 1928: Elle est promue officier de la legion d'honneur. 1935 Colette est elue a l'Academie royale de langue et de litterature francaises de Belgique. 1936 Elle est promue commandeur de la Legion d'honneur. 1945 A l'unanimite, Colette est elue a l'Academie Goncourt. Elle en deviendra la presidente le 1er octobre 1949. 1953 Elle est elevee a la dignite de grand officier de la Legion d'honneur. le 3 aout 1954 Mort de Colette a 81 ans dans son appartement du Palais-Royal. Le gouvernement lui fait des obseques nationales dans la cour du Palais-Royal. Mais l'eglise Saint-Roch refuse les obseques religieuses a celle qui avait repandu autour d'elle un parfum de scandale et, motif officiel, etait deux fois divorcee.
