De sa naissance en 1746, en Aragon, jusqu'a sa mort en 1828, a Bordeaux, ce livre raconte les quatre-vingt-deux annees de la vie d'un des plus grands peintres de notre temps.Faisant des l'enfance connaissance avec Zapater qui deviendra son ami de coeur, Goya fait le voyage a Madrid esperant remporter un des concours. Il echoue deux fois, mais, habile stratege, va s'incruster dans la famille de son maitre, un certain Bayeu, se fiancant avec sa soeur. Il part alors pour Rome, fait mousser son succes a l'Academie de Parme et presente sa candidature pour peindre l'un des choeurs de la basilique du Pilar. Sa carriere debute avec cette fresque... Une seconde periode s'ouvre par son mariage et se poursuit a la Chartreuse de l'Aula Dei, puis dans d'autres eglises aragonaises qu'il decore; mais Bayeu l'appelle definitivement a Madrid qui devient sa seconde patrie. Il peint une trentaine de tableaux pour la Fabrique des Tapisseries. C'est le debut de sa troisieme carriere. Approchant de la quarantaine il realise des chefs-d'oeuvre L'Aveugle a la guitare ou La Vue de Madrid. Traversant une periode de depression, le peintre part rejoindre Don Luis, frere du roi. Cette fois, c'est, pour Goya, la revelation. Commence la quatrieme periode de sa vie: il revele son genie du portrait. Mais, foudroye par une attaque qui le laisse sourd et diminue, il passe des mois au lit en proie a des visions sataniques. Vient la derniere periode, celle de sa liberte interieure, avec la publication des Caprices. Nomme peintre de la chambre du roi, cet homme malade va connaitre son triomphe. Cette biographie, doublee d'un essai litteraire, est aussi une veritable plongee dans l'Espagne du XVIIIe siecle. Michel del Castillo y fait revivre Goya dans son intimite d'artiste et cette Espagne qui coule dans ses veines. Ne a Madrid, de pere francais et de mere espagnole, Michel del Castillo a evoque son enfance et son adolescence chaotiques dans nombre de ses livres. Membre de l'Academie royale de Belgique, de nombreux prix ont couronne son oeuvre.
