Chaque annee, la presse anglophone, de Time Magazine a Newsweek, annonce la mort de la culture francaise, en insistant sur le peu d'echo rencontre par les productions francaises a l'etranger. Face a ces interrogations lancinantes sur le recul de la place de cette culture dans le monde, l' Europe francaise du Siecle des lumieres apparait a certains comme un age d'or, le temps beni du rayonnement de la culture francaise. Le prestige europeen du theatre francais en serait une des manifestations les moins contestables. Au XVIIIe siecle siecle en effet, des troupes de comediens francais sillonnent toute l'Europe, de Cadix a Saint-Petersbourg et de Stockholm a Palerme, proposant au public un repertoire ou se melent les classiques, Moliere au premier chef, et des auteurs aujourd'hui oublies comme Regnard, Destouches ou La Chaussee. Contre une lecture nostalgique et mystificatrice, qui celebre sans l'interroger la presence du theatre francais dans les grandes capitales europeennes, Civiliser l'Europe en decrit et en revele les mecanismes. En s'appuyant sur les methodes nouvelles de l'histoire connectee, appliquees a l'echelle europeenne, Rahul Markovits montre que cette circulation du theatre francais ne se comprend qu'en mettant en lumiere les differents contextes dans lesquels les troupes francaises sont conduites a jouer le repertoire national. Princes et ministres de l'Europe des cours en quete de distinction sociale ou de prestige politique, diplomates et chefs militaires promouvant le soft power francais, chefs de troupe et comediens a la recherche d'opportunites economiques mais souvent animes de l' esprit de retour, administrateurs napoleoniens convaincus de l'influence civilisatrice des chefs-d'oeuvre de la scene francaise: c'est de l'action de l'ensemble de ces protagonistes qu'est constituee la matiere de ce livre. Il en ressort une lecon magistrale: le theatre francais n'etait pas percu au Siecle des lumieres comme un simple divertissement ni comme le signe d'une grandeur litteraire incontestee, mais bien comme l'instrument d'une unification culturelle de l'Europe, sous l'egide parfois pacifique, parfois brutale, des elites francaises, desireuses de s'assurer, selon le mot de Voltaire, l' empire de l'esprit . L'histoire de l' Europe francaise au prisme du theatre ne nous tend pas le miroir de notre grandeur culturelle dechue. Elle nous montre que les dominations culturelles ne sont pas massives et univoques, mais que, derriere l'ordre surplombant du discours, elles sont souvent relatives et toujours localisees.
