Le temps du silure est celui des gestations longtemps secretes qui creve d'un coup en enfantements apparemment catastrophiques. L'idee m'en a ete suggeree par l'image, entrevue en 1960, d'un silure geant somnolant dans le meandre enterre d'un fleuve saharien. Vienne un de ces deluges qui devale des flancs arides de l'Atlas, et toute une faune assoupie dans des poches d'eau cachee se reveillera a la vie parmi les cadavres de chevres, d'hommes ou de chameaux noyes. Libre au spectateur saisi par la vue de cette ruee de boue, si puissante, si ephemere, d'y pecher les allegories historiques qui lui conviennent. Je ne saurais, pour ma part, en dire plus que ce que j'ai assez longuement suggere dans ces pages. (Louis Martinez) En quittant Oran en 1962, au plus fort des ratonnades et des roumicides, le narrateur est renvoye vingt ans en arriere, a cette annee 1942 qui renfermait 1962 comme un poison quand la metropole coloniale etait devenue elle-meme une sorte de protectorat allemand, quand l'histoire se jouait entre un marechal (Petain), un amiral (Darland), et deux generaux (Giraud, de Gaulle). Sur cet arriere-plan historique, le narrateur deroule des histoires individuelles et y accroche des bribes de la sienne a la recherche d'un temps enfui, ressuscite, mais plus encore d'un continent perdu dont n'emergeraient que quelques cretes, un archipel d'ilots et de recifs entre lesquels sont lancees des passerelles de mots, dessinant, frele mais vitale, une mouvante geographie de la memoire. Louis Martinez est ne en 1933, a Oran. Boursier a Moscou en 1955-56, il a enseigne la langue et la litterature russes pendant pres de quarante ans. Apres Denise ou le corps etranger (Fayard, 2000), Le Temps du silure fait figure de second volet d'un vaste ensemble romanesque inspire par la fin de la presence francaise en Algerie et intitule Ciel ouvert.
