Presque tous les problèmes cruciaux de notre école sont en un sens des problèmes philosophiques: autorité pédagogique, « sens des savoirs », laïcité et rapport entre les cultures, définition d'un système éducatif juste, transformations liées au numérique, etc. Pourtant, les philosophes de notre époque parlent peu de l'éducation, encore moins de l'éducation scolaire. La philosophie doit reprendre sa part dans l'approche publique de la « crise » de l'école. C'est à quoi ce livre appelle et veut travailler. Ces problèmes sont philosophiques dans la mesure où ils touchent aux principes censés régir l'institution scolaire. Ces principes sont aujourd'hui confus ou introuvables, s'agissant notamment de ce qui est à enseigner et de ce qui est à évaluer. Tous les acteurs et partenaires de l'institution scolaire sont sensibles à cette déficience, d'où s'ensuivent, à un degré beaucoup trop élevé pour n'ètre pas ruineux, perplexités, inquiétudes, malentendus, découragements et rejets. Mais rétablir pour l'école des principes solides suppose qu'on prenne en compte les complications modernes et tout particulièrement françaises de la relation au savoir et à la culture. C'est le double objet de ce livre. Il faut relire Rousseau, Durkheim, Foucault, Bourdieu, pour remonter aux origines de notre crise intellectuelle, mais aussi pour remarquer ce que les pensées les plus provocantes doivent encore à la notion classique de la culture de l'esprit. « Rien ne s'apprend plus facilement que ce qu'il y a de meilleur. » Si Érasme a raison, alors l'urgence est toujours de faire que le meilleur soit offert à tous les enfants. DENIS KAMBOUCHNER est professeur d'histoire de la philosophie moderne à l'université Paris 1. Spécialiste de Descartes, à qui il a consacré plusieurs ouvrages (dont L'Homme des passions, 2 vol., Albin Michel, 1995, et Descartes et la philosophie morale, Hermann, 2008), il est engagé de longue date dans une réflexion sur les problèmes de la culture et de l'éducation. Après un essai sur La Culture dans l'ouvrage Notions de philosophie, qu'il a dirigé (3 vol., Gallimard, coll. « Folio », 1995), il a notamment publié Une école contre l'autre (PUF, 2000) et co-dirigé La Crise de la culture scolaire: origines, interprétations, perspectives (PUF, 2005).
