L'Academie francaise est nee au XVIIe siecle d'un double projet politique: celui de Richelieu de disposer d'un cercle de lettres pour renforcer son autorite; de la necessite d'user de la langue pour achever l'unite de la France. Le petit groupe de lettres que Richelieu rassemble sous le nom d'Academie -quarante membres - a recu de lui l'engagement d'etre un corps independant: un corps inscrit dans la sphere publique, mais independant du pouvoir politique. Independance et egalite des membres sont les principes fondamentaux de l'Academie. Son histoire est celle de ses rapports avec le pouvoir. Placee sous sa protection, le roi, puis les chefs de l'Etat, empereurs, presidents sont ses protecteurs. Mais l'Academie revendique toujours son independance vis-a-vis de son protecteur. Cette relation fut irreguliere sous la monarchie, elle se brisa sous la Revolution. Supprimee de 1793 a 1904, l'Academie ne retrouve son existence qu'en 1816 et sa pleine independance qu'en 2006 ! De 1940 a 1946, elle a ete menacee une seconde fois de disparaitre. Quel role peut-elle assumer au XXIe siecle, quand la culture se mondialise et meme temps se fractionne au nom de toutes les revendications particularistes ?

Historienne de la Russie, Helene Carrere d'Encausse est membre de l'Academie francaise depuis 1991, ou elle a ete elue secretaire perpetuel en 1999. Helene Carrere d'Encausse a recu le prix Aujourd'hui pour L'Empire eclate (Flammarion) en 1978, le prix Louise-Weiss en 1987, et le prix Comenius, en 1992, pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre. Sa biographie de Nicolas II (Fayard, 1996) a obtenu le prix des Ambassadeurs en 1997. Helene Carrere d'Encausse a publie de nombreux ouvrages, notamment, La Gloire des nations (Fayard, 1990), Victorieuse Russie (Fayard, 1992), Le Malheur russe (Fayard, 1988), Lenine (Fayard, 1988), Catherine II (Fayard, 2002), L'Imperatrice et l'abbe (Fayard, 2003) et L'Empire d'Eurasie (Fayard, 2005), et Alexandre II, le printemps de la Russie. photo: (c) John FOLEY/Opale
