Auberge des oceans, bout du monde et aboutissement d'un continent, Le Cap est une ville mythique dont la legende est sans doute mieux connue que l'histoire veritable. Lieu d'escale incontournable sur la route de l'Asie avant le percement du canal de Suez, elle a vu defiler d'illustres voyageurs qui l'ont parcourue et decrite avec admiration, comme Choisy, Bougainville, Cook, Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, Le Vaillant ou Darwin. Site decouvert par les Portugais alors qu'il est habite des seuls San et Khoi, Le Cap devient au milieu du XVIIe siecle une station de ravitaillement pour les flottes marchandes de la VOC, la Compagnie hollandaise des Indes orientales, dotee d'un grand jardin et d'un fort dont la garnison protege la baie de la Table. Autour de ce noyau se developpe bientot un hameau qui devient une ville lovee dans l'amphitheatre des montagnes qui la protegent des tempetes australes. L'epoque napoleonienne voit la ville devenir et redevenir anglaise. Imperiale et fiere de l'etre, elle vit vers la fin du XIXe siecle l'exaltante epopee de la ruee vers les diamants et l'or decouverts au coeur du pays. A la creation de l'Union de l'Afrique du Sud en 1910, apres la guerre des Boers, Le Cap devient la capitale legislative de la nouvelle nation. C'est en 1948 que tombe sur le pays la chape de plomb de l'apartheid, impose par un regime blanc crispe par la peur du swart gevaar (le danger des Noirs, qui constituent les trois quarts de la population). Le Cap sera une cite phare dans la resistance a la segregation raciale, dans laquelle s'illustreront Desmond Tutu, le charismatique eveque anglican du Cap, et bien sur Nelson Mandela, enferme depuis 1964 a Robben Island dans la baie de la Table. Sous la plume erudite de Dirk Van der Cruysse, l'histoire de cette ville arc-en-ciel de ses origines jusqu'a la fin du mandat d'Helen Zille (2009) prend des airs de roman d'aventures.Ne en 1939, Dirk Van der Cruysse, de l'Academie royale de Belgique, est professeur emerite de l'universite d'Anvers. Il est l'auteur d'une dizaine d'ouvrages d'histoire et l'editeur de nombreuses relations de voyage.

Ne en 1939, Dirk Van der Cruysse est professeur emerite de litterature francaise a l'universite d'Anvers. Apres avoir travaille sur Saint-Simon, il s'est interesse aux princesses allemandes a la cour de France. Depuis les annees 1990, il se consacre a la litterature des voyages du Grand Siecle, particulierement en Asie. Il est membre de l'Academie royale de Belgique, Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (Fr.), Officier de l'Ordre National du Merite (Fr.) et Grand-Officier de l'Ordre de la Couronne (B.). Dirk Van der Cruysse est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages, parmi lesquels Le Portrait dans les Memoires du duc de Saint-Simon (Nizet, 1971), La Mort dans les Memoires de Saint-Simon: Clio au jardin de Thanatos (Nizet, 1981), Madame Palatine, princesse europeenne (Fayard, 1988), Louis XIV et le Siam (Fayard, 1991), L'abbe de Choisy, androgyne et mandarin (Fayard, 1995), Chardin le Persan (Fayard, 1998), Le Noble desir de courir le monde: Voyager en Asie au XVIIe siecle (Fayard, 2002), De branche en branche: Etudes sur le XVIIe et le XVIIIe siecles francais (Louvain, Peeters, 2005).
