Mais, par-dela les termes, le programme est le meme: statut, independance, juge d'instruction, droits de la defense, relation presse/justice, justice et politique, affaires "affairistes," affaires "criminelles," terrorisme, perspectives, etc... L'un des grands juges de la lutte antiterroriste, l'un des magistrats les plus proteges, les mieux informes et les moins bavards de France, Gilbert Thiel, nous livre ici un temoignage exceptionnel et la profession de foi d'un croise de la justice . Outre les reseaux de financement politique clandestins, il evoque pour la premiere fois dans un ouvrage les affaires Simone Weber, Guy Georges, qu'il a traitees, mais aussi les dossiers basque et breton, les reseaux islamistes implantes en France, sans oublier la Corse et l'enquete sur le meurtre du prefet Erignac. Ne a Metz en 1948, Gilbert Thiel a integre l'Ecole nationale de la magistrature en fevrier 1976, et obtenu son premier poste de juge d'instruction a Nancy en 1978. Apres quatre annees au parquet general de Metz il revient a l'instruction a Paris en 1994. Il est affecte a la section antiterroriste depuis 1995. Daniel Carton est journaliste. Il fut pendant dix ans journaliste politique au Mondeet grand reporter au Nouvel Observateur.

Originaire de Metz, diplome de l'Ecole Nationale des Impots et de l'Ecole Nationale de la Magistrature, Gilbert Thiel a commence sa carriere judiciaire a Nancy ou il a exerce les fonctions de juge d'instruction. Des 2 000 dossiers qu'il a instruits, certains ont ete tres mediatises: l'affaire des fausses factures de Nancy qui a revele les financements occultes de partis politiques par la grande distribution, ou l'affaire Simone Weber . Nomme premier juge d'instruction a Paris, le juge Thiel sera saisi de l'affaire Guy Georges, baptise par les medias le tueur de l'Est parisien, dont tous les dossiers lui seront confies au printemps 1998. En pleine vague d'attentats islamistes a Paris, il est affecte debut septembre 1995 a la section antiterroriste de l'instruction. Pendant pres de trois ans, il consacrera l'essentiel de son activite aux procedures visant a demanteler les reseaux islamistes implantes en France. Depuis une bonne demi-douzaine d'annees, Gilbert Thiel est en charge, entre autres procedures, du "contentieux" corse (assassinat du prefet Erignac, assassinat de Jean-Michel ROSSI, assassinat de Francois SANTONI, attentats, racket...). Il est l'auteur, aux editions Fayard, de On ne reveille pas un juge qui dort (2002) et de Magistrales insomnies (2005).
