Qui aurait soupconne que Napoleon etait un spectateur assidu de l'Opera de Paris ? Que, dans le feu des batailles, il s'inquietait des pieces a l'affiche et du contenu des livrets ? Qu'il fut lui-meme a l'origine de certaines creations et parlait d'egal a egal avec les compositeurs? Napoleon melomane: cet aspect du grand homme serait bien inattendu s'il ne cachait un interet moins innocent. En effet, l'expert en propagande qu'etait l'Empereur a vu dans la scene de l'Opera, fleuron de la vie parisienne, un lieu ideal pour faire valoir son action aupres de l'opinion. Sous couvert de personnages de theatre - dieux, rois et heros -, c'est sa propre legende qu'il donnait a voir, exaltee par la musique chantee en francais (le privilege de l'Opera), magnifiee par l'eclat des costumes et des decors, parfois mise en mouvement par de fastueux ballets. Derriere Les Bayaderes, Les Abencerages ou meme Le Laboureur chinois, se profile toujours l'ombre imperiale... On decouvrira ici comment l'Opera a ete un miroir de la politique napoleonienne, miroir embellissant bien sur. Six annees du regne sont passees au crible, annees cruciales. 1810 marque ce qu'il est convenu d'appeler le tournant monarchique: souverain d'un empire qui s'etend sur une grande partie de l'Europe, Napoleon est entre dans le club tres ferme des dynastes. 1815 sonne le glas du regime, l'homme porte aux nues s'effondre. Entre ces deux dates, evenements fastes et echecs alternent, qui inflechissent curieusement les creations lyriques. C'est aussi un repertoire oublie que ressuscite cet ouvrage. S'appuyant sur des sources inedites, il analyse autant la thematique des oeuvres que les conditions de leur production, de l'examen du livret au spectacle final. Il demonte les mecanismes caches par lesquels Napoleon fait de l'Opera un theatre a sa gloire: censure et autocensure, noyautage du milieu des artistes, controle de l'administration. De la une etonnante galerie de portraits ou les vrais createurs - Spontini, Le Sueur, Kreutzer, Cherubini, Mehul... - cotoient courtisans serviles et hommes d'appareil. Tous ces elements jamais mis en lumiere ajoutent une page tres nouvelle a l'histoire politique et culturelle de la societe francaise. " (...) About the Author :
David Chaillou est maitre de conferences a l'universite d'Artois. Chercheur au CRLM (Paris-IV-Sorbonne) ainsi qu'au centre de recherche d104e et Cultures (universite d'Artois), il mene des travaux d'histoire culturelle portant sur les rapports entre musique et politique en France, de la Revolution francaise a 1914. En 2004, David Chaillou a recu le grand prix de la Fondation Napoleon pour son livre Napoleon et l'Opera (editions Fayard), et prepare actuellement un nouvel ouvrage pour cette meme maison d'edition. Parallelement a son travail universitaire, il est aussi compositeur. Ses partitions sont editees aux editions Billaudot et jouees en France et a l'etranger (Russie, Autriche, Italie, Espagne, entre autres). Elles ont ete diffusees sur Mezzo, Radio-France (France-culture), Radio classique et Orpheus radio (Russie).
