Humilie, comme tous ceux de sa lignee, par les Bourbons, critique, puis menace durant la Revolution, eternel candidat au moindre trone vacant d'Europe, opportuniste ou passant pour tel (il fut quasi jacobin dans sa jeunesse et finit sa vie en monarque autoritaire chasse par une emeute), moque par ses adversaires politiques des deux bords au cours de son regne, Louis-Philippe a laisse dans la memoire des Francais une image ambigue et contradictoire. Par surcroit, ce n'est que depuis peu de temps que sont accessibles aux historiens les archives permettant d'eclairer sa figure de facon definitive. Guy Antonetti est le premier d'entre eux. Qui etait donc le dernier roi sous lequel les Francais ont accepte de vivre ? Faudrait-il, comme on le fait souvent des personnages mal connus, le statufier, le crediter d'avoir fait avancer la democratie libera-le et d'avoir donne au pays pres de vingt ans de stabilite ? Certes non. Si son regne ne fut pas le desastre que l'on a dit et si nombre de re-formes positives portent son empreinte propre, il est clair que Louis-Philippe a echoue. La monarchie issue des Trois Glorieuses etait a ses yeux d'une perfection indepassable. Il etait convaincu que le choix fait alors - le juste milieu entre l'absolutisme de l'Ancien Regime et l'anarchie jacobine, garanti par la charte 1814 revisee, etait le seul possible. Il se prenait pour un homme de son temps, alors qu'il n'etait au fond qu'une figure eminente de cette aristocratie eclairee du xviiie siecle qui se rallia au tiers etat en juin 89 en revant de transformer la monarchie en une royaute constitutionnelle on connait la suite. Rejetant la lecon, Louis-Philippe ne sut pas evoluer, en depit d'une in-telligence et d'un courage evidents. La meme insurrection qui l'avait mis sur le trone en juillet 1830 le balaya en quelques jours en fevrier 1848. Ne en 1773, il prolonge, au siecle de la vapeur, l'epoque des Lumieres. N'a-t-il pas, enfant, croise Voltaire, lequel avait vingt ans en 1715 et n'a-t-il pas dine avec Robespierre et avec Washington, mais son pere n'a-t-il pas ete l'homme le plus riche du royaume, et n'etait-il pas lui-meme quatre fois l'arriere-petit-fils de Louis XIV ? Louis-Philippe a voulu etre roi, un vrai roi, un grand roi. Il a seulement oublie que la France ne voulait plus de roi du tout, ni petit ni grand. Professeur a l'universite de Paris II, Guy Antonetti, agrege de droit, est historien du droit, specialiste des questions financieres et economiques.
