Une exploration de la grande pauvrete du XXe siecle permet de rendre compte de constantes et d'evolutions. Le progres economique et social comme les therapeutiques de lutte ont fait regresser certaines pathologies. La vieillesse comme l'infirmite ne sont plus synonymes de chute automatique dans la trappe de la grande pauvrete. Le chomage est mieux indemnise et la perte de l'emploi n'implique plus une pauvrete quasi automatique. Il faut cependant nuancer fortement le propos. Dans tous les pays ou le chomage progresse, la France en premier lieu, la necessite de secours augmente correlativement. Le chomage fabrique bien de la misere et l'on n'est pas surpris que l'irruption de ce fleau ait provoque l'apparition de la thematique de l'exclusion. Si les pauvres ne meurent plus de faim, ils continuent a mourir de froid dans les rues ou meme, comme au cours de l'ete 2003, de chaleur excessive. Le paysage de la pauvrete se renouvelle. La disparition des vieillards des routes du vagabondage a fait place a l'irruption de jeunes qui ne reussissent pas a s'integrer. Le drame de familles monoparentales reste present. L'immigration, notamment dans ses formes extremes avec la montee des sans-papiers, engendre toujours la pauvrete. On le voit, ce monde comporte une multitude de categories qu'il est bien difficile d'agreger sur le plan social et le plan culturel. Dans une societe ou le travail reste une valeur centrale et le fondement d'un revenu, on est amene a en deduire qu'il y aura toujours des pauvres, dans la mesure ou il existera toujours des personnes inaptes au travail du point de vue psychologique. A cet egard, les mentalites ne sont pas pretes a tolerer cette masse de gens de rien percus comme inutiles au monde .

About the Author :
Apres avoir enseigne aux universites Nancy II et Clermont II, Andre Gueslin occupe actuellement la chaire d'histoire sociale contemporaine de l'universite Paris VII-Jussieu. Andre Gueslin a publie plusieurs ouvrages, notamment L'Invention de l'economie sociale (Economica, 1987/1998), Gens pauvres, pauvres gens (Aubier, 1998), Les Gens de rien: Une histoire de la grande pauvrete en France au XXe siecle (Fayard, 2004) et Mythologies de l'argent: Essai sur l'histoire des representations de la richesse et de la pauvrete dans la France contemporaine, XIXe-XXe siecles (Economica, 2007). Andre Gueslin a egalement dirige Michelin, les hommes du pneu (editions de l'Atelier, tome 1 en 1993, tome 2 en 1999), et codirige Handicaps, pauvrete et exclusions (editions de l'Atelier, 2003).
