Rien ne predestinait Louis Hachette a fonder un empire. Entre en 1819 a l'Ecole Normale, il doit quitter l'enseignement quand la Restauration ferme les portes de l'Ecole. Apres avoir songe a une carriere d'avocat, il reprend un fonds de librairie classique. Des lors, il commence a tisser methodiquement une toile d'araignee qui va lui permettre de dominer le monde de l'imprime scolaire et universitaire. Au milieu du siecle, il s'attelle a une tache complementaire: offrir a la jeunesse puis aux adultes des livres de "recreation" et de "vulgarisation." Ainsi naissent la Bibliotheque des chemins de fer, la Bibliotheque rose, les guides Joanne. Pour parvenir a ses fins, l'editeur s'est empare des renes de la distribution grace au reseau de kiosques installes dans les grandes gares, ancetres des "relais H." Outre ces reussites, il lance plusieurs magazines, dont Le Tour du monde, ainsi que de nombreux dictionnaires et encyclopedies, en particulier le prestigieux Littre. En quelques decennies, il devient le patron de la plus grosse entreprise du livre en Europe. Intellectuel amoureux des belles-lettres mais en prise avec son epoque, capitaine d'industrie et innovateur permanent, Louis Hachette n'a pas laisse indifferents les ecrivains qu'il publia et qui, pour certains, lui reprocherent d'avoir "industrialise la pensee." Nul doute, en effet, qu'il bouleversa le metier d'editeur et qu'il realisa son ambition: exercer une influence sur ses contemporains et continuer a enseigner en diffusant le livre a grande echelle. Jean-Yves Mollier est professeur d'histoire contemporaine et directeur du Centre d'histoire culturelle des societes contemporaines a l'universite de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. Il est l'auteur, entre autres, de L'Argent et les Lettres (Fayard, 1988) et de Michel et Calmann Levy (Calmann-Levy, 1984).
