Depuis la prehistoire, l'homme n'a cesse de vouloir connaitre le futur et d'inventer des stratagemes pour tenter de le maitriser. N'etait-ce pas deja pour assurer la chasse du lendemain que nos lointains ancetres representaient des bisons perces de fleches sur les murs des cavernes? Des procedes de divination inventes par les peuples de l'Antiquite aux methodes " scientifiques " mises au point par les prospectivistes de notre fin de siecle, les moyens de predire l'avenir ne se ressemblent guere. Mais chaque epoque a eu le besoin de faire des reves d'avenir, pour le meilleur et pour le pire: il y a eu les faux prophetes du Moyen Age, le astrologues de la cour de la Renaissance, ou encore les diseuses de bonne aventure du Grand Siecle. Et les philosophes des Lumieres ont tente, a leur maniere, de percer les grandes lignes du futur. Sans reussir a tuer l'irrationnel: magnetisme, somnambulisme et autres formes de spiritisme ont connu un succes croisant au XIXe siecle, tandis que surgissaient de nouveaux prophetes annoncant un monde meilleur. Oracles, propheties, predictions, utopies, toutes les anticipations que les hommes ont elaborees au fil des siecles ne se sont guere realisees, mais elles sont les reflets de leurs espoirs et de leurs craintes. L'homme de 1900 se croyait a l'aube d'un siecle radieux. Celui de l'an 2000 n'y croit plus guere et, si les futuristes ne pretendent plus faire " metier de prophete," astrologues et voyants continuent a rassurer, a defaut de predire l'avenir. Georges Minois est professeur d'histoire et membre du Centre international de recherches et d'etudes transdisciplinaires. Il a publie de nombreuses etudes sur l'histoire des mentalites religieuses.
