Deux millions de protestants a la mort de Calvin, un peu plus d'un million sous Henry IV. L'histoire des reformes dans la France du XVIe siecle est, d'une certaine facon, un echec. Isolee dans une France majoritairement catholique, la communaute protestante s'organise rapidement selon l'ordre politique preconise par le reformateur. Mais il n'est pas facile d'appartenir a l'Eglise minoritaire. Face a la montee de l'intolerance, des les premieres persecutions declenchees par Francois Ier et Henri II, les gentilshommes huguenots transforment le protestantisme en parti guerrier. Des lors, les simples croyants sont entraines dans des luttes qui les depassent. Ce sera quarante ans de guerres de religion auxquelles l'edit de Nantes, venant apres une douzaine d'ephemeres traites de paix, mettra enfin un terme. Sur cet echiquier tragique, on imagine le desarroi des plus faibles et le courage de ceux qui ne renoncent pas. Et pourtant un million de protestants demeure. Ils ont la certitude d'appartenir a une race de pionniers ou de renovateurs, une race qui pourfend l'impurete et le mensonge. Mais ils savent aussi qu'ils ne peuvent s'appuyer que sur eux-memes pour accomplir cette tache gigantesque: changer l'etre humain. Et en ce sens Calvin et ses heritiers spirituels ont ete des prophetes: l'education protestante familiale et scolaire modela des hommes nouveaux tournant resolument le dos au Moyen Age et dont les valeurs se revelent, aujourd'hui encore, modernes et efficaces. Janine Garrisson, specialiste d'histoire moderne, est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages consacres a l'histoire politique et religieuse du XVIe siecle.

Janine Garrisson est historienne et ecrivain, specialiste de l'histoire politique et religieuse du XVIe siecle. Agregee d'histoire et docteur es lettres, elle est professeur honoraire de l'universite de Limoges et membre de la Societe de l'histoire du protestantisme francais. Janine Garrisson est l'auteur d'ouvrages historiques, de biographies et de romans. On lui doit notamment Henry IV (Seuil, 1984); L'Edit de Nantes et sa revocation (Seuil, 1985); Les Protestants au XVIe siecle (Fayard, 1988); Nouvelle histoire de la France moderne.
