Si la legende n'a fait de Joachim Murat (1767-1815) qu'un flamboyant cavalier alliant le courage a l'elegance, l'histoire a plutot retenu son echec politique final. Comme il arrive souvent, la verite du personnage est plus complexe.
Sous le fils d'un simple aubergiste du Lot et sous le revolutionnaire de 1793 percait un ambitieux avide de jouer un role, bientot capable de faire donner la troupe contre les emeutiers parisiens en 1795, plus tard, en Brumaire, d'apporter a Bonaparte - qu'il avait servi en Italie et en Egypte - une aide decisive. Du Caire a Moscou, il accompagna Napoleon a peu pres partout et fut de toutes les victoires et conquetes des francais; ses exploits lui valurent des 1800 d'epouser Caroline, soeur du Premier Consul, de faire partie de la premiere fournee des marechaux de l'Empire (1804), de recevoir ensuite le grand-duche de Berg (1806-1808), enfin le trone de Naples (1808-1815) ou il sut, en s'entourant d'artistes et en rassemblant de magnifiques collections, donner du lustre a sa fonction.
Cet homme qui ne fut jamais un traitre en vint a oeuvrer pour l'unite italienne et bien sur prit ses distances avec son beau-frere, lequel ne voyait en lui qu'un executant. Sans pourtant se derober jamais aux grands commandements militaires qui lui furent confies, il finit par negocier avec les adversaires de la France. Mais sans doute il n'en fit pas assez en matiere d'opportunisme, puisque ceux-ci ne lui pardonnerent pas de s'etre porte au secours de l'Empereur durant les Cent-Jours. Il succomba avec le panache qu'on lui avait connu sa vie durant.
Membre de l'Institut (Academie des sciences morales et politiques), professeur a l'universite de Paris IV-Sorbonne, president de l'Institut Napoleon, Jean Tulard a publie plusieurs dizaines d'ouvrages sur la Revolution et l'Empire. Il est ainsi l'auteur de Napoleon ou le Mythe du sauveur (Fayard) et a dirige le Dictionnaire Napoleon ainsi que le Dictionnaire du Second Empire.

Ne en 1933, Jean Tulard est historien, specialiste de Napoleon Bonaparte et de l'epoque napoleonienne. Agrege d'histoire et docteur es-lettres, il devient pensionnaire de la Fondation Thiers, de 1961 a 1964, avant d'etre attache de recherche au CNRS. Directeur d'etudes a l'Ecole pratique des hautes etudes en 1965, il est nomme, en 1981, professeur a l'Universite de Paris-Sorbonne et a l'Institut d'etudes politiques de Paris. Jean Tulard a ete president de la Societe de l'histoire de Paris et de l'ile-de-France, de 1973 a 1977, et president, de 1974 a 1999, de l'Institut Napoleon. Membre du conseil d'administration de la Cinematheque francaise, il a ete consultant historique pour le telefilm Valmy (1968), de Jean Cherasse et Abel Gance, et pour La Revolution francaise (1989), de Robert Enrico et Richard T. Heffron. President honoraire de l'Institut Napoleon, Jean Tulard est par ailleurs membre de l'Academie des Sciences morales et politiques. Il est officier de la Legion d'honneur, officier de l'Ordre national du Merite, commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, et chevalier des Palmes academiques.
Auteur d'un nombre considerable d'etudes, Jean Tulard a recu plusieurs recompenses, parmi lesquelles, le Prix Gobert de l'Academie francaise (1971), le Grand Prix national de l'histoire (1977) et le Prix du Memorial (1981) pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre. On lui doit notamment Joseph Fouche (Fayard, 1998), Murat (Fayard, 1999), Dictionnaire Napoleon (Fayard, 1999), Les Vingt jours: Louis XVIII ou Napoleon ? (Fayard, 2001), Le Sacre de l'empereur Napoleon: Histoire et legende (Fayard, 2004), Figures d'Empire: Murat, Fouche, Joseph Fievee (Fayard, 2005), Dictionnaire du roman policier (Fayard, 2005), Les Thermidoriens (Fayard, 2005) et Napoleon: Les grands moments d'un destin (Fayard, 2006). Jean Tulard a egalement dirige la publication de differents ouvrages, en particulier du Dictionnaire biographique des membres du Conseil d'Etat, 1799-2002, avec Roland Drago, Jean Imbert et Francois Monnier (Fayard, 2004).
