Elle regnera pendant vingt ans sur l'immense empire russe (1741-1761). Adoree par son pere Pierre le Grand, qui la fait peindre nue en petite Venus, Elisabeth suit resolument les brisees du tsar. Elle procede a des reformes importantes, dont certaines tres en avance sur son temps, a commencer par l'abolition de la peine de mort, une premiere dans le monde civilise; elle emet des decrets soucieux de la dignite de la femme et fait etat d'une conception avant-gardiste de l'urbanisme ou de l'ecologie. Son gouvernement engage des mesures fiscales et met une revision du code de lois en chantier. L'art - l'architecture, le theatre, la musique - atteste la volonte de la souveraine d'associer harmonieusement les influences occidentales aux valeurs proprement russes. La Russie pese alors de tout son poids sur la diplomatie et les conflits; elle represente une grande puissance continentale, mais s'erige aussi en protectrice des chretiens d'Orient. Bien avant les Sovietiques, elle integre la Prusse orientale dans son empire. Pendant la guerre de Sept Ans, ses armees parviennent a ecraser Frederic II; et seule la mort d'Elisabeth permet au roi de Prusse de sauver son honneur. Adulee par les philosophes des Lumieres, cherie par ses compatriotes, cette "joyeuse imperatrice" s'efface pourtant derriere les personnalites ecrasantes de Pierre Ier et de Catherine II. A l'aide de nombreux documents inedits, cette biographie scrute avec bonheur la personnalite et le role d'une autocrate que le Grand Frederic n'hesita pas a appeler "la bete" ! Libre et affichant un mode de vie peu conforme a l'Etiquette, Elisabeth annonce les revendications de la femme du XXIe siecle.

About the Author :
Nee d'une mere francaise et d'un pere suisse, Francine -Dominique Liechtenhan, fait ses etudes d'histoire, de philologie russe et francaise a l'universite de Bale ou elle soutient une these de doctorat sur Astolphe de Custine, voyageur et philosophe (Champion-Slatkine, 1990). Poursuivant ses etudes a l'Universite de Paris-Sorbonne, elle y soutient sa these d'habilitation sur le role de la Russie dans la guerre de Succession d'Autriche (publiee sous le titre La Russie entre en Europe, CNRS Editions, 1997, traduction russe publiee chez OGI en 1998). Cet ouvrage lui vaut le prix E. Colas de l'Academie francaise. Chargee de recherche au CNRS, specialiste de l'histoire de Russie, elle enseigne a l'Universite de Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV) et a l'Institut catholique de Paris. Ses cours sur l'histoire contemporaine sovietique ont donne lieu a deux ouvrages: Le Grand pillage; du butin des Nazis aux trophees des Sovietiques (ED. Ouest France, 1998) et Le Laboratoire du GOULAG (DDB, 2004). Consacrant l'essentiel de ses recherches a la Russie a l'epoque moderne, elle signe de nombreux articles, editions de textes ou syntheses dont Les Trois christianismes et la Russie (CNRS Editions 2002). Elle vient de publier Elisabeth Ire de Russie, l'autre imperatrice (Fayard, 2007). Francine-Dominique Liechtenhan a aussi collabore au Siecle des Platter (Fayard 1995-2006) d'Emmanuel Le Roy Ladurie. Elle dirige actuellement un projet consacre aux Francais dans la vie intellectuelle et scientifique russe (XVIIIe-XXe siecles) et prepare une edition de textes sur le commerce franco-russe au XVIIIe siecle.
