Ancre dans le Moyen Age par son attachement a ses terres et a ses droits feodaux, Commynes est plus encore tourne vers un monde nouveau ou il tisse ses reseaux, de sa Flandre natale jusqu'au coeur de l'Italie en passant par les Balkans... Reseaux politiques, car Commynes est bien le maitre diplomate de Louis XI, mais financiers aussi, grace auxquels l'economie devient un visage du politique. A cote de l'homme d'Etat, c'est encore l'homme prive aux ambitions jamais dementies qui apparait en pleine lumiere, pret aux rebellions feodales, procedurier inlassable, defenseur hargneux de ses interets personnels... Le tout est transcende par l'ecriture de ses Memoires, un monument litteraire par la force et l'acuite du regard, la liberte du jugement, le poids de l'experience. Createur, sous l'autorite de Louis XI, d'une nouvelle approche diplomatique et politique et de sa theorisation, Commynes est sans maitre cette fois, createur d'une nouvelle ecriture de la memoire et de l'histoire.

Joel Blanchard est professeur a l'universite du Maine et l'un des specialistes les plus reconnus du Moyen Age tardif. Joel Blanchard est l'auteur d'une biographie de Commynes (Philippe de Commynes, Fayard, 2006), d'une edition de la correspondance du memorialiste (Droz, 2001), d'une edition critique des Memoires (Droz, 2007, 2 vol.), de la premiere edition integrale des Memoires en livre de poche ( Lettres gothiques, 2001), de la premiere traduction des Memoires en francais moderne (Pocket, Agora, 2004), et de nombreux autres travaux, parmi lesquels: Commynes et les Italiens. Lettres inedites du memorialiste (Klincksieck, 1993); Commynes l'Europeen. L'invention du politique (Droz, 1996); Ecriture et pouvoir a l'aube des temps modernes (PUF, 2002; en collaboration avec Jean-Claude Muhlethaler).
