Fils naturel d'une nonne libertine, condamne au sort des enfants trouves, Jean Le Rond dit d'Alembert acquiert tres jeune la reputation de plus grand geometre d'Europe; esprit facetieux, il enchante les salons par ses saillies burlesques et ses dons d'imitateur. Mais c'est la litterature qui fait de lui la grande figure du siecle des Lumieres. Le "Discours preliminaire" de l'Encyclopedie, entreprise dont il asure la direction avec Diderot, lui vaut une gloire comparable a celle de Voltaire et l'amitie des "despotes eclaires," Catherine de Russie, Frederic le Grand, qui tentent meme de l'attirer chez eux. Apres avoir investi les salons parisiens et les academies, d'Alembert devint le federateur du "parti philosophique," soutint avec ardeur la lutte contre les "devots," s'engagea sur tous les fronts et dans toutes les querelles qui opposainet les gens de lettres et souvent leur valaient les foudres de l'autorite. Peu apprecie a la cour, il avait aussi des ennemis dans son propre camp. Ceux-ci reprouvaient ses idees radicales, ceux-la enviaient la position acquise par ses seuls merites qui lui donnait le magistere sur le monde des sciences et des lettres, la quasi-totalite de ses pairs lui rendaient justice, mais ceux qu'il avait blesses lui vouaient une haine feroce, le qualifiaient d'usurpateur et le condamnaient pour son charlatanisme suppose sa pretendue superiorite en geometrie lui aurait valu son triomphe dans la litterature, alors que sa renommee d'homme de lettres en aurait impose aux mathematiciens...On lui reprochait aussi son despotisme et son esprit vindicatif. Ce dernier reproche etait parfois justifie; mais si d'Alembert intrigua parfois, ce fut pour la cause, celles des Lumieres, et nullement par ambition ou interet. Discret sur sa vie intime, il connut une passion publique qui ne s'eteignit qu'avec lui. Le couple d'Alembert-Julie de Lespinasse compte au nombre des idylles qui n'ont pas encore revele tous leurs secrets. Au-dela des querelles, il reste son oeuvre: inseparable du caractere de l'homme partage entre ironie et fureur, elle a suscite generosite et passion partisane et reste, a cote de celle de Voltaire, la manifestation la plus eloquente, le proces-verbal le plus explicite de l'exceptionnelle fermentation intellectuelle d'un siecle qui a voulu s'aventurer hors des territoires connus et labourer les terres viergesque son optimisme disputait aux fantismes et au fatalisme.

Il a recemment publie Casanova (Fayard, 2006), Les Grands Discours parlementaires de la Revolution (Armand Colin, 2005), et D'Alembert, une vie d'intellectuel au siecle des Lumieres (Fayard, 2007).
