Jean-Jacques Abernatis, qui n'a jamais ete marie sauf avec les distractions de son esprit, devance l'age de la retraite par suite d'un heritage inattendu. Ses collegues bibliothecaires l'ont toujours considere comme particulier, avec un vocabulaire tombe de la lune, des gouts, des passions qu'on ne voit a personne. Il a eu des amours, mais fugitives, de brefs eclairs vite eteints, de simples passades. Cette fois, il decide de quitter Paris. Lui si exagere de comportement, cherche un pays excessif, a son image, pour s'y installer, couvrir sa solitude d'un ciel comme son ame. Un couple d'amis lui chuchote qu'en France meme, a quelques centaines de kilometres de la capitale, une telle contree existe: le Cotentin. Il s'y rend avec sa vieille Simca, finit par denicher une maison dite de caractere, du moins d'un caractere analogue au sien. Mais la batisse n'est qu'a louer avec tous ses meubles et quelque chose d'autre qu'on lui cache et qu'il apprendra bien vite a ses depens. Il s'y enferme, relie au reste du monde par le telephone, les journaux, et ses promenades a travers champs devant la mer a deux pas, au creux vivifiant d'une campagne soulevee d'emotion autour de ses raides rochers. Et si la vieillesse recelait une autre jeunesse, une facon plus vive de compter ses jours, de s'illuminer de la flambee des heures ? N'empeche, l'ami Jean-Jacques se trouve aux prises avec une etrange histoire.
