Il la rappellera peut-etre lorsqu'elle sera eteinte. Jadis, les arbres furent des dieux ou des messagers. Naguere, ils fournissaient de quoi soulager les gens souffrants, combattre les maladies, eviter le malheur, obtenir le bonheur. Hier encore, en plantant un arbre, l'homme celebrait la naissance et le mariage; il esperait la prosperite de la famille et la tranquillite de l'au-dela. Mais aujourd'hui, victimes des pollutions et des deboisements, les arbres n'ecartent plus tous les maux de la terre: ils les devoilent. Sans conteste, l'arbre est un objet d'histoire fascinant. Cette histoire-la, trop mal connue du public, reserve des surprises innombrables et est souvent plus prenante que celle de beaucoup de personnes ou de collectivites humaines.
