En mai 1997, Julien Green commence une nouvelle histoire: Une image me poursuit. C'est toujours de cette maniere que m'apparait un livre: un personnage, un paysage qui s'imposent et je ne peux commencer que lorsque j'entends le son, un peu comme un film muet qui decouvrirait la parole. Cette fois, un garcon de vingt ans tout au plus se trouve au coin d'une rue de Paris, il est immobile et soudain s'ecrie Elle est folle, cette tocante !... Me voici a mon tour dans ce que je pressens etre la reponse a mon Voyageur sur la terre... C'est le recit d'un dedoublement: sans cesse je est un autre, le reve vous emmene dans l'espace, plus vite et plus loin que n'importe quelle drogue artificielle. La vie est-elle un songe, comme le temps ? A vous de decouvrir l'histoire de Vivien. A ce qu'il appelait son roman sont jointes ici des histoires d'epoques diverses, presque toutes d'Amerique. Le denominateur commun de tous ces recits est le style, le beau francais d'un auteur dont la simplicite se colore d'humour anglo-saxon.

About the Author :
Americain protestant ne a Paris en 1900 de parents d'ascendance anglaise, Julien Green se convertit a 15 ans au catholicisme. A 16 ans et demi, il s'engage dans les ambulances americaines sur le front de l'Argonne, puis sur le front italien de Venetie en 1917. Apres la guerre, il finit ses etudes a l'universite de Virginie ou il ecrit sa premiere histoire, The Apprentice Psychiatrist. Revenu en France fin 1922, et apres avoir desire etre peintre, il commence a publier en francais: ses livres conquierent d'emblee un large public et sont aussitot traduits dans les principales langues. Parallelement aux romans, nouvelles et essais, Julien Green tient son celebre Journal, qui couvre plus de trois quarts de siecles. Pendant la Deuxieme Guerre mondiale, mobilise aux Etats-Unis, son pays, il est sur les ondes la voix de l'Amerique. A cette epoque, il publie egalement un volume autobiographique, Memories of Happy Days, qui remporte un grand succes, et traduit Charles Peguy. Romans, pieces de theatre, etudes autobiographiques et historiques, volumes du Journal se succedent apres son retour a Paris en 1947. Il meurt a Paris en 1998.
