Qui est Samuel Ringel? Seulement un " faiseur d'or "? L'un de ces hommes qui jonglent avec le cours des monnaies et les millions de dollars de capitaux flottants? Ou bien un homme charge de mystere, issu d'un passe tenebreux, un " faiseur d'or " sans doute, mais qui recherche bien autre chose que la puissance financiere dont il dispose deja? C'est a Davos, lors d'un de ces forums rassemblant ministres, banquiers, economistes, que Serge Derain rencontre pour la premiere fois Samuel Ringel. L'un est tout, possede tout: l'or, la gloire, les femmes. L'autre n'est qu'un jeune ecrivain avide qui n'a que son desir et les mots pour vivre. Il se vend a Ringel. Il devient son homme-chien, comme il dit de lui-meme. Il veut obtenir en echange l'or dont il reve et jouir enfin de la gloire, de la richesse et des femmes. Peu a peu, il remplit ses poches de billets. Il connait le dessous des cartes. Il frequente les coulisses des banques. Il seduit les femmes. Il reussit. Mais peut-etre n'est-il pas lui-meme de la trempe d'un " faiseur d'or "? Peut-etre Samuel Ringel s'est-il joue de lui? Peut-etre a-t-il decouvert le passe de Ringel et ne peut-il l'accepter? Apres quelques mois d'ivresse, il craint pour sa vie.
