La guerre de Cent Ans a ete le lot commun des individus comme des groupes humains, celui des feodaux encore pris dans leurs fidelites contractuelles, celui des officiers royaux decouvrant le service de l'Etat a mesure qu'ils le concoivent, celui de maitres de l'Universite que leurs engagements intellectuels menent a des conflits qui n'etaient point les leurs. En un etonnant contrepoint ou passent les visages renouveles d'un Charles le Mauvais, d'un Bertrand du Guesclin, d'un Pierre Cauchon et de bien d'autres, Jean Favier fait jouer les themes divers qui s'appellent le nationalisme naissant, la reforme de l'Etat et l'unite de l'Eglise, le prix du ble et le salaire du macon, l'influence parisienne et la force provinciale, le metier des armes et la volonte de paix. Jean Favier est ne en 1932. Membre de l'Institut, directeur general des Archives de France, il est aussi professeur a l'universite de Paris-Sorbonne et directeur d'etudes a l'Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes. Il s'est fait connaitre par de nombreux travaux sur les finances medievales et sur les structures economiques et sociales de Paris a la fin du Moyen Age. Ses livres Philippe le Bel, Francois Villon, De l'or et des epices ont tous connu un grand succes. Il dirige l'Histoire de France (Fayard) dont il a lui-meme ecrit le tome II, Le Temps des principautes.

About the Author :
Jean Favier est ne en 1932. Eleve de l'Ecole des chartes, archiviste paleographe en 1956, il obtient l'agregation d'histoire et devient membre de l'Ecole francaise de Rome. Il est directeur d'etudes a l'Ecole pratique des hautes etudes (1965-1997) et professeur a la Sorbonne (1969-1997). Parallelement, Jean Favier est successivement directeur general des Archives de France, directeur des Archives nationales, puis president de la Bibliotheque nationale de France. Il est membre de l'Academie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres, depuis 1985, et president de la Commission francaise pour l'UNESCO. Il a publie de nombreux ouvrages, notamment Paris: Deux mille ans d'Histoire (Fayard, 1997), Louis XI (Fayard, 2001), Les Plantagenets: Origines et destin d'un empire: XIe-XIVe siecles (Fayard, 2004), Un Roi de marbre: Philippe le Bel; Enguerran de Marigny (Fayard, 2005) et Les Papes d'Avignon (Fayard, 2006).
