Les peuples de l'Europe centrale ont partage tous les grands moments de l'aventure europeenne _ feodalite, Reforme et Renaissance, Lumieres, revolution liberale et capitalisme. Cet ouvrage voudrait fournir les points de repere de leur histoire millenaire. Une histoire riche en bouleversements politiques _ des Habsbourg aux Ottomans, l'Europe centrale fut souvent dominee par des dynasties etrangeres _ et marquee par deux siecles de luttes religieuses. Une histoire que l'on ne peut envisager dans une optique nationale et qu'il faut replacer dans un contexte plus large: les Polonais ne sont devenus une nation qu'apres avoir vu disparaitre leur Etat en 1795, tandis que les Tcheques n'ont pris conscience de leur specificite qu'en rejetant une culture allemande qui les avait domines pendant dix siecles. Ce n'est en effet qu'au lendemain de la Premiere Guerre mondiale que furent crees de nouveaux Etats dits " nationaux ." Mais les vainqueurs ne purent faire coincider les Etats et les nations: la Tchecoslovaquie etait multinationale, la Pologne comptait 33% d'allogenes, et la Hongrie vaincue avait deux millions de Magyars a l'exterieur de ses frontieres. Les democraties formelles qui avaient ete instaurees a Budapest, a Varsovie, a Vienne deboucherent rapidement sur des dictatures. Seule la Tchecoslovaquie se revela fidele aux democraties occidentales, qui l'abandonnerent aux appetits du IIIe Reich. Le reve fou de Hitler de construire un " espace vital " pour le peuple allemand entraina tous les peuples d'Europe centrale dans la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Le sort des armes offrit les peuples " liberes " a la volonte de Staline qui allait faire de l'Europe centrale un glacis de l'URSS. Le reveil des revendications nationales, conjugue au marasme economique des democraties populaires, conduisit en 1989 aux " revolutions de velours," sonnant le glas des pouvoirs marxistes. Georges Castellan, professeur emerite de l'Universite de Paris III, ancien enseignant a l'INALCO, est l'auteur notamment d'une Histoire des Balkans.
