Pasternak est, avec Mandelstam, Tsvétaïéva et Akhmatova, l'un des « quatre grands poètes » que nous aura donnés le vingtième siècle russe. C'est aussi l'auteur du mondialement célèbre Docteur Jivago, dont la parution, en Italie, lui a valu d'ètre banni de l'Union des écrivains et de devoir refuser, en 1958, le prix Nobel de Littérature. Son recueil inaugural, Ma soeur la vie, à l'été 1917, invente une poétique de l'instant, où des « millions de révolutions » intimes font signe à l'histoire. L'époque, que domine bientôt le « démon du temps » Staline, fait de Pasternak, malgré lui, un poète épique. S'il a pensé un instant dire oui au monde soviétique, c'est pour le refuser avec une force accrue dans un vaste roman qui proclame, sous un ciel de guerres et d'insurrections, la prééminence de l'amour et de la poésie sur toute politique.
