Utopiste par excellence, Charles Fourier est un homme à multiples visages. Psychologue, il élabore une théorie des passions amoureuses, qui choqua tant ses contemporains qu'elle ne fut publiée qu'en 1967, plus d'un siècle après sa mort. Critique de la société, il imagine une communauté modèle dont il s'ingénie à détailler tous les aspects, planifiant même la couleur des uniformes ou la forme des meubles d'enfants. Visionnaire enfin, il prévoit une époque où les oranges mûriront à Varsovie et où l'on pourra transformer l'eau de mer en limonade... Non sans amertume sans doute, il demande aux romanciers qui critiquent ses écrits: " Ferez-vous jamais un roman qui vaille le quart du mien? "

On a souvent qualifié d'insensées certaines spéculations du célèbre autodidacte de Franche-Comté. Et si la " folie " de Fourier n'était qu'une autre facette de son optimisme radical? Convaincu que les hommes sont capables de changer la société et que nos seules limites sont celles de nos désirs, il élabore une explication complète de l'univers, où s'inscrit un curieux système cosmogonique, et n'aura de cesse que sa vision idéale de la société devienne réalité.

Fourier a été présenté tour à tour comme un précurseur de Marx, de Freud ou du surréalisme, sans que l'on s'intéresse à la genèse de ses idées. Dans cette biographie exhaustive et colorée, Jonathan Beecher montre que toute la doctrine de Fourier s'est forgée en réaction contre la Révolution française et qu'elle est née du désir de recréer un ordre dans un monde ébranlé jusque dans ses fondements. Ainsi apparaît, au-delà de ses naïvetés et de ses outrances, un système cohérent, dont la modernité n'a pas fini de nous inspirer, qu'il s'agisse de son programme d'éducation, ou de sa conception du travail, où Fourier voyait un exutoire vital de la personnalité.

Professeur à l'Université de Californie à Santa Cruz, Jonathan Beecher a publié une anthologie des textes de Fourier aux Etats-Unis. Sa biographie a reçu un accueil enthousiaste de la part d'un grand nombre d'intellectuels américains, de Eugen Weber à Stanley Hoffmann.
