La conscience definit l'humanite de l'homme. Mais est-elle elle-meme definissable sans ce corps qui la rend possible par ses dispositions propres a l'intelligence et au discernement ? Autrement dit, comment penser la conscience dans son irreductibilite tout en reconnaissant son incorporation originaire ? Analyse de la notion Par sa forme, sa sensibilite, son pouvoir propre d'etre affecte, et sa memoire, le corps humain resiste a toutes les formes d'objectivation; centre d'action, source de sens et de normes, il tend a se constituer en sujet, par appropriation de ses experiences et de ses conduites. Au-dela des approches dualistes et/ou mecanistes, l'experience de la conscience de soi sera ainsi rapportee a la formation de l'identite personnelle d'un corps capable d'interiorite, l'enjeu central etant l'institution d'un ordre proprement humain. C'est cet ordre, assume dans l'experience de la responsabilite, qui est constitutif de la conscience. Etude de textes Dans la Meditation Sixieme, Descartes examine la verite de la conscience sensible; la richesse de son analyse sur le sentiment et l'identite personnelle du corps propre trouvera ses prolongements dans la phenomenologie. L'Essai de Locke inaugure la problematique moderne de la conscience en mettant l'aperception de soi en rapport avec la memoire et la responsabilite. C'est precisement la formation du pouvoir de repondre de soi qui est analysee dans La Genealogie de la morale de Nietzsche. Enfin, dans les Meditations cartesiennes, Husserl montre comment la notion phenomenologique d'intentionnalite permet, en restituant a la conscience son rapport specifique au monde, d'eviter de la reduire a un pur spectacle, ou de la dissoudre dans l'activite.
