Le purgatoire est ne au Moyen Age mais il n'a jamais ete aussi populaire qu'au XIXe siecle. Autour de 1850, il connait un renouveau spectaculaire dont les effets se font sentir jusqu'au debut du XXe. Comment expliquer ce phenomene qui fit alors de la devotion aux ames du purgatoire l'une des plus repandues de l'Europe catholique ? Aux sources de cette renaissance, la force du culte des morts, culte familial du souvenir et de la tombe, la necessite de repondre aux revendications affectives des fideles et au discredit massif de l'enfer, enfin la volonte de l'Eglise de contrecarrer l'expansion du spiritisme en France et en Europe. Pour definir la nature de cette devotion, outre l'organisation materielle, financiere et institutionnelle du culte, citons trois principaux aspects: le role d'intercesseur attribue aux ames du purgatoire, la sollicitude a l'egard des ames delaissees, tristement abandonnees car sans famille ici-bas ou trop pauvre pour payer les messes, et le nombre important d'apparitions d'ames du purgatoire. Or au debut du XXe siecle, au terme d'une ultime phase de prosperite, le purgatoire s'efface peu a peu des consciences et des representations. A l'origine de cette revolution des mentalites: la Grande Guerre, et ses millions de disparus. Elle lui porte un coup fatal, personne n'ayant eu le coeur d'imposer aux morts glorieux de la patrie d'attendre la gloire celeste dans les flammes du purgatoire.
