Les Thoughts Concerning Education de Locke font figure d'oeuvre mineure. Pourtant, leur place dans l'histoire des idees doit etre revisee. En Angleterre, la pensee pedagogique de Locke commente le passage d'un systeme de valeurs aristocratique a celui d'une nouvelle classe dirigeante dont les visees utilitaristes s'accordent mal avec les valeurs morales que Locke defend. Cette pensee est liee au reste de l'oeuvre: s'appuyant sur les fondements psychologiques elabores dans l'Essai sur l'entendement humain, elle est solidaire de l'analyse politique des Deux traites et de la place croissante de la religion dans l'oeuvre de Locke. C'est aussi dans sa biographie que naissent des reflexions qui constituent un sommet de la pensee pedagogique europeenne. Ces reflexions connaitront au siecle suivant un succes qui justifie la reputation de Locke comme inspirateur des Lumieres europeennes. Jean-Francois BAILLON, ancien eleve de l'E.N.S., agrege d'anglais, docteur es lettres, est specialiste de l'histoire des idees en Grande-Bretagne aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles et a traduit plusieurs ouvrages sur John Locke. Il est maitre de conferences a l'universite Michel de Montaigne - Bordeaux 3, ou il participe aux activites du C.I.B.E.L. (Centre Interdisciplinaire Bordelais d'Etude des Lumieres). Cet ouvrage est le fruit de la collaboration entre les editions Armand Colin et le Centre National d'Enseignement a Distance, etablissement public d'enseignement qui dispense des formations de tous niveaux a plus de 350 000 inscrits repartis dans le monde entier.
