À l'occasion de ses trente ans de carrière, Didier Lockwood, musicien compositeur violoniste de jazz, retrace son parcours riche et atypique.
Issu d'un milieu très simple - père instituteur et violoniste amateur, mère au foyer peintre à ses heures -, il naît et grandit dans les quartiers populaires de Calais, une ville dévastée par la guerre. Ce sont son éducation musicale et de belles rencontres qui vont sceller son destin. Jeune prodige mais pur produit de conservatoire, il se détache du classicisme et réapprend à parler la musique avec son frère, pianiste de jazz. Son talent d'improvisation impressionne un producteur américain qui engage le petit frère qui joue du violon . Didier Lockwood a 16 ans: il décide de devenir violoniste de jazz.
Il fait ses débuts au sein du groupe de rock progressif mythique Magma, sous la baguette du batteur Christian Vander. Trois années de tournées vont le mener sur les scènes des plus grands festivals et lui assurer la reconnaissance du public et des professionnels. Après Magma, Didier Lockwood aborde l'univers des studios, des accompagnateurs de vedettes de variété. Il quitte rapidement ce milieu de requins qui ne lui convient pas.
C'est à l'occasion d'un concert qu'il est remarqué par Stéphane Grappelli. Celui-ci le prend sous son aile et, à 21 ans, Didier Lockwood signe son premier contrat d'artiste soliste dans l'un des plus grands labels de l'époque. Il se produit quelques mois plus tard au prestigieux Carnegie Hall de New York - son rêve - et partage dès lors la scène avec les meilleurs: Stan Getz, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea.
Il s'installe à New York au début des années 1980. L'occasion de faire de nouvelles rencontres mais aussi de constater la condition peu enviable du jazz aux États-Unis. De retour en France, il crée un concerto pour violon, Les Mouettes, dont le succès lui ouvre les portes du monde classique. Éclectique, il collabore aussi bien avec les plus grandes formations symphoniques qu'avec des artistes tels que Nougaro ou Barbara. Plus récemment, il crée en 2001 la première école internationale des musiques improvisées, à Dammarie-les-Lys.
Ces rencontres, Didier Lockwood les raconte ici; il livre un récit tendre et plein d'humour d'un parcours exceptionnel qui donne à sa musique ce son unique grâce auquel le jazz français résonne aujourd'hui sur la scène internationale.
