About the Book

Plucked from his home in the open air and plunged into darkness with hundreds of strangers...

Will Wheatear ever see the light again?

As a bead on a necklace, Wheatear feels proud and valued - but then he's cast into the Box, where only the thinnest sliver of daylight can enter. Upset and confused, Wheatear must quickly learn which beads can be trusted - and which would like to see him crushed...

It isn't long before Wheatear faces the toughest choice of his life:

work his way up and escape the Box, or sink even lower to save his new friends...?

This charming chapter book is sure to delight all readers aged 7+ with its tale of making new friends and surviving in unfamiliar places.

30% of all profits go to The Macular Society, and themes of difficulty with sight can be found throughout the story.

About the Author :
Jane Bower comes from Leeds and trained in Lancaster. Her 40 years' experience with KS1/2 and advisory teaching in art, drama, dance and storytelling also encompassed a 25-year position as an associate lecturer at Cambridge University's Faculty of Education. She has taught in 615 venues throughout the UK and in India, UAE, and Armenia. She is the author of several books for primary teachers, and for twenty years was a regular writer for monthly educational magazines. She is an elder of the United Reformed Church and a vocal coach to trainee ministers. Jane also worked as an artist in schools, and her pupils' artwork won several national awards. She has been a professional actor since 1999, and writes and performs her own solo shows and presentations. Leonard (Len) Bower won a scholarship to train as an illustrator at Leeds College of Art in 1939, but his studies were interrupted by WWII when he joined the RAF as an aircraftsman at Mildenhall, Binbrook and St Athan. During this time he developed his considerable skills in illustration, using it to teach other aircraftsmen about the structure of planes. His natural abilities as a teacher caught the eye of a commanding officer, and he was called back to St Athan, this time as an instructor. After completing his studies at Leeds College of Art, where he met his wife Sadie (who also became a renowned art teacher in Leeds), he became Head of Art at Batley Grammar School, and then a senior lecturer in Art Education back at Leeds College of Art. Because Len chose to become a teacher rather than an illustrator, he never had any work published until Jane asked him to illustrate Thread and Thrum - although he produced a constant stream of highly professional artwork, posters and visual aids for all kinds of occasions, mainly church-related. Around the age of 94 he gradually lost his sight to macular degeneration. Apart from his six years in the RAF he has lived in Leeds all his life. His witty, humorous war diaries and poignant memoirs inspired his daughter Jane Bower to write and perform her solo show Daddy's Diaries about his remarkable war years. The show features his illustrations. You can learn more about Len by watching the show via www.tinyurl.com/daddysdiaries
