About the Book

Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) is now a truly global phenomenon. Brands like Warrior Dash, Spartan Race and Tough Mudder are almost household names. Assisted by the likes of Facebook, YouTube and Instagram these companies have been able to generate viral content that has helped to fuel this surge in popularity. Accompanied by rising levels of stress and an ever increasing desire to find meaning in life people are flocking to these events. The reality is however, that none of them existed prior to 2009/2010. Prior to 2009 only one company really stands out, Billy Wilson and his Tough Guy OCR . In the absence of social media and with the internet in its infancy the former soldier built a tribe of Tough Guys willing to come back year after year. Participants converged on Wilson's farm in Wolverhampton, UK, from all over the world to tackle an array of obstacles that required deep reserves of physical/mental strength and teamwork to overcome. Remarkably, they are still coming. While he is often portrayed as an eccentric veteran, it is clear that Wilson's ingenuity and life experience set the standard for the multi-million dollar OCR industry. In 1998 the starting gun was sounded at the 11th annual Tough Guy event; 4000 people set off through the mud and mayhem. A journalist writing in the Independent said: "The stragglers took more than five hours but all 2,900 who completed the course received a medal, because if ever there was an event where the taking part was as important as the winning, this was it." Unlike most sporting events this wasn't all about winning, it was about promoting teamwork too. Sadly though, Billy's pioneering role in shaping the modern OCR has been overshadowed by these newcomers to the game. Media hype surrounding the new kids on the block and lack of in-depth historical investigation is partly to blame. Wilson deserves to be given credit for his pioneering work. The Genesis: Obstacle Course Running (OCR) aims to address this.
