A la entrada del poblado, y enclavado en el camino, se ve un edificio que, si en la parte alta aspira pomposamente a ser fonda, en la planta baja no quiere ser taberna, sin conseguir ninguna de ambas inofensivas pretensiones. Frente por frente a este hospedaje modesto y limpio, una parra sirve de toldo a la mesa de piedra, en torno de la cual hay siempre r�sticos bancos y, en �stos sentados, r�sticos ociosos murmuradores. Como la murmuraci�n no basta a llenar por completo los d�as de sol, con ella alterna el juego, y para mayor variedad, el tute se hermana con el monte, o tras de la re�ida baraja, triunfa el pac�fico domin�. La gallarda moza, m�s que tabernera y menos que fondista, suelta de andares, rubicunda de rostro, apretada de carnes, viene o va, conforme la llaman o despiden los jugadores, trayendo o llevando las cartas y fichas, el vaso de cerveza, la copa de licor. De esta suerte, al vicioso ning�n incentivo le falta: una deleitosa bebida, una partida animada y una buena moza -vino, juego y mujer-, las tres cosas tiene. La muchacha, para desesperaci�n de sus admiradores, es implacablemente honrada, y as� el recreo no pasa de los ojos. El m�s inocente requiebro lo tomar�a como un agravio. -�Amparo! -grita alg�n jugador o mir�n del juego. Amparo entonces acude y sirve diligentemente cuanto se le pida de su taberna excesiva o de su fonda deficiente. -�Amparo! -ha gritado don Venancio, y Amparo ha acudido. -�Cerveza! -a�ade el buen indiano, y la tabernera se la trae. -�Ya hizo usted una de las suyas! -exclama entonces el compa�ero de juego del fastuoso don Venancio-. �En cuanto pide de beber, se le va el santo al cielo! -Por mirar lo que no le importa -agrega zumbonamente un tercer jugador, se�alando con un gui�o del ojo derecho el desabrochado corpi�o de la graciosa y fresca hospedera. -Pues hoy no pas� por aqu� nada que le distraiga -replica la buena moza, pronta al quite. -Mucho decir es -interrumpe don Venancio exhalando un suspiro.
