About the Book

Malkarai Faerstathe is a skilled agent hunting the most dangerous criminals in the country as a covert enforcer. He was born with black sclera, and has dealt with society's reaction to this mutation since birth - a range from polite curiosity to outright revulsion. Because of this dark mutation he is a very secretive person, selective and possessive about who is close to him - all of whom he has lost over time. Satyrna Hennessin is a bright, intrepid, optimistic young woman with a passion for helping and healing. She has an unusual fascination for those with the dark mutation and fiercely protects them every chance she gets, beginning when two dark friends of hers were unfairly killed at a young age. Even though her intentions are honorable, Satyrna still sees only Malkarai's physical appearance, and when she tries to help him, things take a quick downward turn.

Review :
"I found out about this book from the author at a convention in Iowa. It was just as delightful as her personality! Of course, being at a convention, I had no money left and grabbed a copy of it here (Amazon). The story is fun and gritty. Great characters and action throughout the dialogue. It is one you can picture playing out on the big screen. I'm looking forward to more of the stories!" - Matthew E. N. "This book and the series is awesome! The author really knows how to captivate her readers. I would give the series 6 stars if I could.: )" - Matt C. "I really loved reading this one. The author has an excellent grasp of characters; every single one feels incredibly real, complete with quirks and flaws that you never think about until you see them on the page. The best part is that those quirks aren't just the same stereotypical quirks you see in every other dystopian novel. Her settings are just as detailed, coming to life right before your eyes as she takes you around Cavington, the castle, and the surrounding areas. I felt like every scene was very well grounded in their respective settings, which just bolstered everything else. The story was really clever without being inaccessible, and the action was great. A lot of books are really vague in the way they describe fight scenes, but EM made sure it was easy to follow without being dry. I have an issue with wanting to jump ahead, but The Dark kept me grounded and engaged the entire time. I'm so excited to read more of this series!" - Callie J. P. "Not the type of book I normally read but I enjoyed it. There is a nice reality to it and the fights are crisp and clean. I enjoyed that combat was combat and not a bunch of blade flourishing and acrobatics. Looking forward to seeing the characters grow more as a group and individuals in the next book" - James R. "This is a fast-paced read set in an intriguing alternate future that is grounded in reality and is sure to please both fans of fantasy and realism. There is plenty of cloak-and-dagger action and mystery to keep readers wondering what's next, and the fun and witty characters are easy to fall in love with. Enjoy this great story!" - Audra A. K.
